There’s something to be said about being a storied French fashion house like Dior, and that’s possessing more than 65 years of history full of iconic people, places and events.

Founded in 1946 by Christian Dior, the French luxury label is in itself now an icon of fashion and beauty, especially since the recent appointment of Raf Simons as head designer late in 2012.

The fragrance arm of the label began as Christian Dior Parfums in 1947 with the launch of its first scent, Miss Dior, named after the founder’s sister, Catherine. Since then the brand has released a number of signature fragrances including Diorama in 1949 and Diorissimo in 1956.

Dior fragrances La Collection Privee DECOR

The 12 new fragrances in Dior La Collection Privée encapsulate the house’s history and its unique aesthetic via the medium of scents like the rare Iris Florentina, Somali Incense, Indonesian Oud Wood, Indonesian Patchouli and Ambergris from New Zealand.

All of the new scents were created by Dior’s Parfumeur Creator François Demachy; apparently his favourite is New Look 1947 – named after Dior’s fashion-changing “New Look” dresses for which it is perhaps best-known – and based on the fragrance of tuberose absolute.

Cologne Royale was inspired by the royal courts of the 18th century and contains bergamot, citrus, earl grey tea and pepper; Milly-La-Forêt is named for Christian Dior’s country house and includes white musk and Granville is named for the founder’s childhood in the town of the same name in Normandy and contains pine, rosemary and resin.

Grand Bal includes scents like jasmine and tea and is inspired by the designer’s love of grand parties; Mitzah is named for Christian Dior’s muse Mitzah Bricard whom he met when he arrived in Paris and is redolent of Somali incense which has a strong rose scent; Bois D’Argent is described as a “veritable perfumer’s fantasy” and contains iris florentina with a dry, green and fruity scent; Leather Oud is based on the very rare Oud wood from Indonesia and is intense and woody.

Patchouli Impérial is based on an intense version of the patchouli scent which has been an essential Dior ingredient in the time of the New Look revolution; Ambre Nuit was inspired by the glamorous evening of the 18th century and contains the fragrance of “rose wrapped in amber”; inspired by the couturier’s residence in Provence, Château de la Colle Noire, Eau Noire combines vanilla with lavender.

And finally, Oud Ispahan was inspired by a “vision of a modern, enchanting Orient” and is a mix of Oud wood, rose, amber and labdanum absolute.

No matter what your preference, when it comes to discovering a scent that’s perfect for you, one of Dior’s 12 new fragrances is sure to fit.
