Models become actresses and an actress becomes an historical fashion icon in Karl Lagerfeld’s new fashion film “Once Upon A Time … Deauville 1913”; shown for the first time in Singapore at Raffles Hotel on Wednesday, May 9, 2013.

The film follows the path of Mademoiselle Gabrielle, performed by British actress and recent new wife Keira Knightley (pictured below left), as she opens her hat shop on her way to becoming “Coco” thanks to the apparently influences of a number of super stylish ladies – played by Ashleigh Good, Tallulah Harlech, Caroline de Maigret, Amanda Harlech, Stella Tennant, Jamie Bochert and Saskia de Brauw.

Although the script may be a bit stilted; The New York Times’ The Cut Blog described it as “terribly awkward, but who cares!”, but they redeemed themselves by also saying “… The exquisite styling and fabulous feathered hats totally make up for it”.

According to The Blog, the black and white film’s best moment was model Lindsey Wixson’s “priceless line, “I’ll take everything. I’ll send for my secretary. By the way, I’m Miss Vanderbilt,”; and we have to agree.

That line plus cameos by Brad Kroenig’s son Hudson as Coco’s nephew and the dogs, and of course, all the amazing hats, add to the short film’s charm. Knightley’s performance may seem a bit laissez-faire with her slang-sprinkled pronouncements, but she perfectly captures Mademoiselle Chanel fascination with all things new.
