In a symphony of understated luxury, something the brand is known for, the Bottega Veneta Autumn Winter 2013 collection was both “considerably informal and precisely polished” with overtones of the 1940s in its styling.

Showing a silhouette that emphasised volume, designer Tomas Maier accentuated a womanly, demure, style with skirts reaching the knees in fuller, more A-line shapes. Detail was added via piping in contrasting colour and the cuts were more linear than in earlier collections.

Winter shades of black, slate and pearl white were brightened with dashes of red, yellow and curry were seen on a series of flannels and wools in a variety of weights and textures from stiff to soft, almost velvet-like.

Off-setting the heavy fabrics were leather, silk, satin and even a lacquered straw; continuing his previous penchant for juxtaposing textures, Maier again combined wools with nappa leather and raffia.

For Autumn Winter 2013 the Bottega Veneta iconic bags are smaller, with handles and sometimes framed, created a much more formal version of the brand’s mainstay items; the shoes were inspired by a men’s loafer or lace-up and cover-up the foot, this balanced by a thinner heel.

Bottega Veneta’s emerging strength in costume jewellery was again in evidence for Autumn Winter 2013; there were more “must have” pieces this time created from elaborate bronze chains and porcelain bisque medallions.

“The collection is about proportion, precision, ease, and the simple beauty of the material,” said creative director Tomas Maier.

This concept translates into a collection that is eminently wearable, even more so than previous seasons’ looks. The Bottega Veneta woman for Autumn Winter 2013 is all grown-up, elegant and collected.
