Black-and-white was a huge trend seen in the recent fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris, and Korean designer Lie Sang Bong was in favour of the same colour palette for his Spring Summer 2014 collection. There were more looks that played with blue and pink in the collection that he presented in Paris earlier this month but the designer selected the majority of the black-and-white pieces for his show at Singapore Fashion Week 2013.

Along with the simple colour scheme, the overall feel for his Spring Summer 2014 collection was surprisingly minimalistic – in stark contrast to his previous shows that experimented much more with texture and detailing. After all, Lie gained popularity internationally thanks to flamboyant celebrity fans like Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

The lines were clean and there was a slight sportswear influence – spotted in an interesting Bermuda piece that appeared to be a skirt from the back and pair of striped shorts from the front. There were also 1950s styled shirtdresses cinched at the waist with a belt of the same colour before flaring out into a full skirt which were updated with smart collars, sheer panels, tiny laser cut outs, and the running print of the night – a concentric floral stencil pattern.

Even when the floral stencil print was combined with stripes, the sleek lines and uncomplicated design kept the whole look neat. Lie also dabbled in the 1960s, with skinny capri pants and an A-line dress that Twiggy would be proud of. When the floral pattern was transplanted onto a multi-colour trench dress – there was a hint of Japanese artist Takashi Murakami’s work.

The last few looks were dramatic gowns – featuring one show-stopping, graphic, long dress with a sheer necklace and the same floral stencil magnified. More elaborate numbers wrapped up the show, there were layered taffeta skirts and cut-out bodices but Lie stuck to black and white. However, there was a pair of flower-bedecked glasses and glow-in-the-dark headgear that were the runaway stars of the show!

Lie’s Spring Summer 2014 collection was a resounding success with wearable pieces that would be easily translated onto the street combined with a few standout looks that we imagine will be red carpet hits.

The Lie Sang Bang show took place on October 15 2013 at the Singapore Fashion Week 2013. Singapore Fashion Week 2013 runs at Marina Bay Sands until October 19, 2013.
