Balenciaga showed a dazzling range of silhouettes at Paris Fashion Week today.

The luxe label’s Spring/Summer 13 runway offering took cues from all things ruffled and cropped to create an interesting showcase.

Designer Nicolas Ghesquière included a range of stomach-baring tops in the elegant collection, including more boxy-shaped pieces along with criss-cross bras.

He teamed the torso-exposing tops with a range of separates, with chic tailored trousers and dramatic cascading ruffled skirts.

The Flamenco style skirts and dresses on display added a touch of flamboyance to the otherwise simply structured outfits.

There was also an air of primness to proceedings, with straight patterned miniskirts making an appearance. They were teamed with a range of different tops, including long sleeved textured items, and the boxy crop-tops that featured earlier on in the runway.

Skirts also boasted edgy points, and were worn with a plain white vest top and a leather-looking three-quarter sleeved top.

The line featured a subtle colour palette throughout – largely in line with many other presentations at the coveted fashion event.

Black, white, eggshell blue and beige hues dominated the catwalk, which were echoed in the footwear colours.

“It was fantastic,” Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman said of the collection.

“It was less androgynous and more feminine for him.”

Balenciaga also drew attention to accessories, with models strutting down the runway holding the new bucket bag shape. The collection’s evening pieces were teamed with smaller versions of the tote, while larger ones were used with daywear.

Shoes were kept simple and mannish-looking, featuring lace-up fronts and sensibly sized heels.

Balenciaga drew in a star-studded front row, with Kristen Stewart making a much-buzzed about appearance.

Also showing at Paris Fashion Week today are Balmain, Rick Owens and Lanvin. Tomorrow, Roland Mouret, Christian Dior and Vanessa Bruno are among the big names to present their Spring/Summer 13 offerings. – COVER MEDIA
