Anna Sui spoke to us about the SG50 bag she designed! | Images: UOB, Showbit

For your eyes only, read what Anna Sui herself has to say about the SG50 tote bag, the best thing that happened to her this year, and the best business lesson she learnt from her dad.

Q: Tell us more about the the SG50 bag you designed for Singapore’s golden jubilee.
Anna Sui: The bag that I have designed was inspired by Singapore’s national flower, the gorgeous violet rose-coloured Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid. UOB wanted to give its customers a commemorative gift that they can use and keep to celebrate Singapore’s golden jubilee which was why the orchid was chosen. To give the orchid a modern spin, I added an “art nouveau” feel to the flower motifs and used my own signature purple colour.

Q: What’s a beauty trend that you’re currently obsessed with?
Anna: I love glitter. Glitter for night and day, shimmering on skin, eyelids and nails.

Q: What’s a fashion trend you’re currently obsessed with?
Anna: I am well known for my bohemian aesthetic, which is so huge right now. One of my favourite bohemian creations is an embellished kimono that I designed for Fall 2014, which is available for purchase on www.Stylebop.com.

Q: Tell us about one impulse buy that became a real keeper.
Anna: I was walking past a store (won’t mention the name) and saw a cute leopard print blouse in the window. I just had to go in to check it out and couldn’t believe it cost only USD$7. I bought one for myself and one for my mom, and was pleasantly surprised to receive so many compliments when I wore it to the office!

Q: What was the best thing that happened to you this year?
Anna: I took my mother on a trip to Spain. We visited all the romantic places she had been to with my father when they were young. The sights were beautiful and I was very moved to see Mum so happy.

Q: What advice do you have for women who are starting their own businesses?
Anna: My father always told me that if I want to have my own company, I should be in the office every day before the rest of my staff arrive and stay later than anyone else. That philosophy of hard work and dedication has always been my inspiration.
