NEW YORK - Twenty-six-year-old designer Alexander Wang has caused a storm with his creations, winning the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2008.
Despite his worldwide popularity Alexander sometimes finds himself hankering after a simpler time when he didn’t need to worry about what other people thought.
“Five years ago, we had gotten our first office. We were literally sleeping and working in the same place, working night and day. But it’s those early stages that you really remember, and you kind of miss sometimes,” he explained.
“I have to pinch myself because you remember those times... now being in a real photo studio with a team it kind of blows me away sometimes and I don’t think I’ll ever really get used to it.”
The designer has chosen new model Ashley Smith and producer-and-DJ Diplo to appear in the Spring 11 campaign for his diffusion line T by Alexander Wang.
He enjoys picking lesser known faces such as Ashley to work with, revealing Diplo – who has worked with M.I.A. and Beyoncé Knowles – was chosen because he is such a fan of the musician’s work.
“I really wanted someone from fashion with someone who is at the peak of what they do in music, which is Diplo,” he told style.com.
“I am such a fan of his. They look great together, it’s a great representation of what we’re trying to do.”
Alexander added he isn’t trying to tell people what to wear or how to put outfits together, he just wants to give them choices.
“I feel quite uncomfortable telling other people what they should wear. I have a message that I put out and hopefully people relate to it in all different kinds of ways and they take it and make it their own. That is what I think style is,” he explained. © COVER MEDIA
