Alexander McQueen’s Paris Runway Show was about “positive futurism”. “It’s futurism with softness, not cold futurism,” WWD quotes Sarah Burton. “It’s looking forward in a completely positive way.”

Colours were kept clean for the Autumn Winter 12 line, so models wore white, pale pink and black. This time around Sarah played with proportion, so while shoulders might be exaggerated using a big white fur piece, so was the skirt of the A-line coat.

Fur has been all over the runways in all four of the major fashion cities, and Burton used it with aplomb. Key were the huge white fur shoulder pieces, which formed a triangle from models’ necks down to their elbows.

Also included were built-up neck pieces in the animal fabric, stretching from the chest up to the shin. A subtler use of fur came in the long shaggy mittens and socks which the models wore.

One key look saw a model donning a huge fur coat, where the hairs were long. It was belted with a futuristic silver buckle and reached down to the knees. The model had bare legs and accessorised with a black visor over her eyes – giving a nod to the futuristic theme.

Ruffles, feathers and tiered pieces also came down the runway, with the final few looks the showstoppers. Red dresses made of fur and feathers included tiered skirts which were so big they took up almost the whole catwalk, while one pale pink fur dress was gathered at the chest and stomach but was shaped like a huge triangle with just the model’s head poking out the top.

In all the show was stunning but not wearable, with fashion industry professionals noting the everyday pieces on offer at the label’s studio will suit most women more. © COVER MEDIA/ IMAGES: SHOWBIT
