LONDON – Designer Paul Costelloe has secured the first slot at London Fashion Week for the last three years. He initially admitted he wasn’t sure he wanted the responsibility, but is now happy to be kicking off proceedings.

Although New York Fashion Week finished late last night with Marc Jacob’s 8pm US time show, Paul still drew a strong crowd.

His collection was inspired by the 60s, especially movie What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? about a former Hollywood star who lives in isolation with her sister. It’s a look which was also drawn on in New York, although Paul offered something a bit different.

Dresses were short, but given bubble skirts as the designer played with volume. The fabric choice also injected some fun into proceedings, so clothes came in pretty pink, gold and green brocades.

One baby doll dress featured a chest piece and high neck made from lace, while the long sleeves and rest of the frock were cream punctuated with an embellished circle pattern (pictured above). A monochrome stripped mini-dress with short sleeves and plenty of volume was another key look (pictured below).

“Hair was piled up onto the head in a variation on the bun and eyes accented with turquoise sweeps to enhance that youthful edge,” reports vogue.co.uk.

London Fashion Week continues over the weekend with collections by Julien Macdonald, Jasper Conran, Henry Holland and Matthew Williamson. The big talk of the event will come on Sunday, when Tom Ford is showing his latest line of womenswear. © COVER MEDIA
