This year’s Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards, also known as the Oscars of the Fashion world, took place the Lincoln Center in New York on June 6.
We love how this event gathers the most talked about icons in the fashion industry and gives them a free pass to push the sartorial limit. The star-studded event saw celebrities including the Olsen twins, Lady Gaga, Victoria Secret’s angels and Jessica Alba traipse down the red carpet in some jaw-dropping (sometimes not in a good way) gowns. Here are some of our picks for the hits and misses of the night: |
||
Hits | ||
Miranda Kerr
Mrs Orlando Bloom showed off her curves and blew everyone away in a black Michael Kors skirt and top combination with cutouts. She paired the outfit with a gold belt and gladiator-style cuffs. And if everyone looked as good as her after having given birth, we’re pretty sure the birth rates in Singapore wouldn’t be at an all-time low. |
||
Leelee Sobieski
Looking almost like a young Sharon Stone, Leelee Sobieski was the epitome of white-hot in a white fitted suit designed by her menswear designer husband Adam Kimmel. – the high-waisted pants were right, the shoes were the right colour and her red lips were just the right shade |
||
Doutzen Kroes
No one does red quite like a Victoria’s Secret model. Doutzen Kroes was picture perfect in an asymmetrical J Mendel gown paired with smokey eyes. |
||
Behati Prinsloo
Model Behati Prinsloo was looking ladylike and ethereal in a gorgeous floor-length Rebecca Minkoff gown. A departure from her usual sporty outfits and she pulled it off with grace. |
||
Karolina Kurkova
We love the emerald hooded jumpsuit from Diane Von Furstenberg, which suits her to a T. The Czech supermodel also paired her look with Christian Louboutin strappy sandals, Atelier Swarovski bangles and plenty of sass. |
||
Misses | ||
Jessica Alba
We thank the selfless Jessica Alba for showing us exactly how colour-blocking, the trend of the season, can go horribly wrong, even when it’s a Diane Von Furstenberg dress. Even more so when you’re sporting a baby bump. |
||
Marcia Cross
The event organisers called and would like to thank Marcia Cross for sponsoring the rental of the disco ball at the ceremony. Oh wait, that was just Marcia herself. |
||
Chloe Sevigny
Oh, we love you Chloe, but this was just wrong on so many levels – the dramatic shoulders, the super low-cut leather ruffle eyelet top, the white lace skirt and we haven’t even talked about the shoes … |
||
Ashley Greene
Well now we know that her clairvoyant superpowers from the Twilight series definitely didn’t translate into real life, or she wouldn’t have put on this awful Michael Kors pink frock that will no doubt land her on many a worst-dressed list. |
||
Donna Karan
Dear Ms Karan, how do we say this politely, but when you decide to wear a hideous shapeless dress that does nothing for your figure, it’s best not to pick one that is the same shade as your skin tone. |
||
And of course, last but not least, we just have to put Lady Gaga in her own “We-just-have-to-talk-about-this” category
Her Thierry Mugler gown was a touch more “normal” than her usual crazy costumes and a whole lot more glamorous. While we weren’t going nuts about her favourite Noritaka Tatehana shoes, her insanely long train was befitting for the occasion as she accepted the award for Fashion Icon. Her eye-popping aqua wig topped off the look perfectly and we applaud her for always making sure the spotlight never leaves her.
