For the Spring Summer 12 runway shows makeup was often understated and hair toned down. Not so much at Vivienne Westwood, where models walked around like scary fairies with matte blue lips and matching eyebrows, or yellow eye shadow paired with purple metallic lipstick.
The edgy cartoonish faces were accompanied with what seemed to be randomly assembled tresses with unflattering textures. Hair styles could indeed have been suitable for either wicked witches or warrior princesses.
Sam McKnight is the Global Creative Director for Pantene and also the creative mastermind behind the Westwood runway hair looks. He and his team had a great time coming up with the styles.
“We created a hard edge that Vivienne wanted and we mixed it with romance,” McKnight says.
“We created three braids, little twists and knots and turned it punky.”
The end product is worthy of goth heroine Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, or of a Japanese anime, with hair imploding and exploding out of braids and buns.
Despite the extreme looks of the runway, the hair stylist feels the up dos could be appropriate for other occasions, too, as looks are versatile.
“You can make it as messy or as stylish as you want,” he says. © Cover Media/ Images: Showbit
