#FaceGoals: Claudia Kim for Bobbi Brown

Bummed out over an abrupt acne eruption of volcanic proportions? I feel you, girl – and so does the deliciously dapper Felix Nguyen, whose pro tips and tricks have worked wonders in weeding out my lumps and bumps.

Here’s what Bobbi Brown’s regional assistant education manager recommends you do if you need an emergency fix for blackheads and blemishes – eradicate ‘em by using a cleanser.

Let’s hear it straight from the (very handsome) horse’s mouth: ““Don’t have pimple cream? Apply [a] cleanser – don’t lather with water – on the blemish and leave it on for 30 minutes. It’ll help dry out the pimple.” Because hey, cleanliness is next to gorgeousness, right?

Quick note: Felix is referring to the all-American brand’s excellent Extra Bright Advanced Foaming Cleanser, $56, but the pimple-busting principle holds for just about any gentle cleanser. Ideally, you should gun for one that comes with acne-alleviating superheroes like salicylic acid, which should get to action straight away to decongest pores and nuke angry red monsters virtually instantly.

Once you’ve splashed off your makeshift mask with warm water, top up with a dash of Bobbi Brown’s Extra Face Oil, $102. “This is my favourite product; I call it the ‘everything oil’,” enthuses Felix. Happily, his obsession with oils squares nicely with mine – great minds think alike? – and with good reason, too.

Think of targeted oil treatments as adhering to the Chinese proverb of fighting poison with poison;  using an oil product may actually reduce the amount our bodies produce by tricking sebaceous glands into cutting back on overproduction.

Opt for botanical blends with skin-softening sweet almond, sesame and jojoba oils, which are designed to calm any number of cosmetic ailments – with the bonus of being skin-tinglingly sensuous to the touch, too, like liquid cashmere caressing your face.

These lightweight formulas take the “kwali face” fear factor out of the equation, too – the oil doesn’t feel greasy and gross in the least, and lends itself well to all manner of mixing and matching.

To zap zits fast, try layering your oil of choice on top of your salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide treatments; this helps fend off the frightful flakiness that can be a side effect of some of your harsher acne medications.

Sequence-wise, I slot face oils in after my softener and serums as a sort of preventative measure, even when I’m enjoying good skin days. So, to recap. Follow Felix’s lead and use a cleanser to “suck” out spots and blackheads, then rinse off and massage in a soothing facial oil. With any luck, these tips should get you out of a spot of bother. Good luck!
