Tried and Tested Ultherapy at Dermacare Aesthetic and Laser clinic DECOR MACHINEWHAT: Ultherapy is an FDA-approved non-invasive aesthetic treatment that uses ultrasound waves to lift, firm and tighten the skin on your face and neck by sending the ultrasound waves into the deeper layers of the skin causing more collagen to be produced. Basically the waves heat up your facial tissue, slightly “damaging” it so that your skin produces more collagen, thereby causing it to look younger and firmer.

There is basically no post-treatment downtime and you can apply makeup right after the treatment. You will not see any major changes for at least one week, with an obvious visible difference occurring around one month after the treatment. The treatment lasts for between 12 and 18 months before needing to redone.

Ultherapy is available from The Dermacare Aesthetic & Laser Clinic is located at #05-05 ION Orchard, 2 Orchard Turn, Tel: 6634 6328 and is open Monday through Sunday from 11am to 9pm. For more details on the procedures available at the clinic, go to www.dermacare.com.sg.

REVIEW: I have previously had a similar treatment Ulthera, and was stunned by how painful it was compared to other aesthetic procedures like fractional lasers, despite being slathered in numbing cream and also having a mild sedative.

However whether it was down to the skilled hands of the doctor at Dermacare – Dr. Dennis Kwan, the medical director of the clinic – or because I was not sedated and therefore more able to focus on ignoring the pain, this time the Ultherapy was far less painful.

In fact, I’d go so far to say that experiencing the Ultherapy procedure at Dermacare was a walk in the park compared to other aesthetic treatments I’ve had; mind you, I do have a fairly high pain threshold so if you wince at a bad sunburn, this might not be for you.

The nurse will apply a layer of the ubiquitous numbing cream used for practically all non-invasive aesthetic procedures, and you’ll have a nice rest for about 30 minutes to let it take effect. Once the procedure begins you will feel a definite “sting” as the machine’s handset is run across your face one side at a time.

But really, the treatment is relatively fast so the sting moves on and more fleshy parts of your face are less painful that the areas over the bone, like your forehead and cheekbones, so you are not feeling the same intensity during the whole 30 minute or so procedure.

The doctor can talk you through the whole treatment so that you have something else to concentrate on, and after it’s done a nice soothing mask is applied.

Within a week my skin was certainly more radiant; through there was some residual pain when you pressed on the cheekbones, forehead and around the jawline area when you washed your face for at least 10 days post-treatment, there was no real discomfort.

Around two to three weeks after my Ultherapy my upper eyelids, cheeks and jawline areas were definitely tighter and firmer; people remarked that I looked like I’d lost weight – I hadn’t – and asked if I’d been on holiday since I looked so “refreshed”.

I’m a firm believer in using these sorts of microwave “rejuvenators” for the skin – the previous, similar treatments I’ve had have really worked. I look at least five years younger than my younger sister … which is always a good thing.
