While tricky to apply, calling for both lip pencil and a great base to keep lipstick from bleeding, there is no shade that is more feminine, sexy and modern as the red.

This fall many red lips were seen on the runway, both in darker and brighter shades. As Rocha and Gucci went for mysterious burgundy lips, Diane von Furstenberg (pictured left), Giles Deacon, Rick Owens and Jil Sander opted for a more classic bright red hue.

Reminiscent of icons such as Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner the red lipstick can bring out every woman’s inner femme fatale.

HERE ARE OUT TOP PICKS:

M.A.C’s Lipstick in Russian Red is a classic in its own right and is often mentioned by celebrities as their go-to when in need of instant glamour. With its womanly brightness it can add a silver lining to any dull everyday outfit.

The great staying power of Kanebo Sensai The Lipstick in 15 Murasaki is unprecedented. With this moisturising and smoothing lipstick you can drink and dance all night long without a smudge. Great for partygoers.

A more budget friendly option is Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipstick in 338 Midnight Plum that despite its name is not a darker purple shade but actually glides on in a sheer, bluish-red tone. © COVER MEDIA, Images: SHOWBIT
