Runway to reality: How to wear glitter makeup for fall

Here’s an AW18 beauty trend we’re taking a shine to. While we’re not advocating coating your face with glitter (you can if you like), adding a touch of sparkle to your beauty routine works wonders for the forthcoming party months

The glitter trend from Spring Summer 2018 is so strong it’s bled into this fall - not that we’re complaining or anything. If designers say glitter is still in, then it’s still in.

While Giambattista Valli sent models down the runway with full faces of sensational glitter, Preen by Thorton Bregazzi opted for a sleek smattering in golden and silver flecks on the forehead and a swarth of gold sparkling eyeshadow was worn by the models at Ulla Johnson.

As much as we love a touch of sparkle in our makeup, having a full-time 9-to-5 job makes sporting glitter makeup IRL tricky to pull off. If you’re not that daring and just want to try a subtle glitter look, there are plenty of options.

Rather than overdosing on high-impact shadows, use a glitter-heavy eyeliner along the lower lash line for a precise, but head-turning statement. The key to nailing this look is to look for a liquid formulas like the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner ($30) that offer smooth application and dry quickly for all-day wear. You can smooth it on with a brush or use your fingers to add extra sparkle.

Instead of reaching for your classic highlighter, take some fine loose glitter and tap it on your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose and along the cupid’s bow. Fine glitter like the Spacepaste Face Glitter by Lemonhead ($33) gives you a more natural finish, but if you’re feeling more daring and adventurous, use larger chunks. Alternatively, you can also use a glitter eyeshadow for that same strobing effect.

Cream glitter pigments like the 3CE Pot Eye Shadow ($29) add an iridescent touch to your lids without overwhelming your face. Remember to keep things subtle by sticking to neutral shades or sheer shades that flatter and work with your natural skin tone. Complete the look with a matte coat or two of black mascara to add contrast.

Body glitter is a subtle way to add some sheen to your body, especially when the light hits you. You can either buy it in a cream, liquid, powder version or as a spray. If you’re using a liquid, cream or powder body glitter, one tip is to distribute the product evenly with a kabuki brush. We like the Fenty Fairy Bomb Glittering Pom Pom ($42) – it’s a giant, bunny-like powder puff that is jam-packed with shimmer to dispense glitter all over your skin.

Glitter lips

All you'll for this look is a lip balm, liquid lipstick of any colour of your choice, a small flat dense brush and lots of glitter. After prepping your lips with lip balm, blot any excess product off and follow up with liquid lipstick. You want to go with a non-drying liquid lipstick like the Pixi Matte Last Liquid Lip Lipstick ($21) that is infused with rosehip to give the lips a smooth finish so your glitter goes on nicely. Now for the fun part, get your glitter and flat brush ready and press on the glitter. You want to do this when the liquid lipstick is still wet so the glitter will adhere to the lips and dry simultaneously with the liquid lipstick.

Sparkly nails are an easy way to add some shine to your beauty regime. While glitter nails are fun, the removal process isn’t quite as joyous. To make it easy for yourself, one tip is to soak a cotton ball with nail polish remover. Next, place the cotton ball on your nail and wrap it completely with aluminium foil. Repeat this process on all of your fingers, pressing down on the foils while the remover works its magic.
