Warm weather paired with soaring high humidity levels here makes our skin’s sweat and oil glands work in overdrive mode.

And when you have a layer of makeup on your skin, this excessive sebum and perspiration on your skin’s surface causes the makeup pigments to get messed up, slide around, look streaky and uneven, or just melt off. It’s a tall order to fix this molten makeup situation but thankfully, there are some makeup stay-on tricks and tips and recommendations that every woman needs to know.

#1. Use less makeup

Let skin breathe and avoid heavy foundations and concealers like the plague. Whether the foundie or concealer you use comes in a powdery formula, cream based, or liquid types, the trick is to use as little as possible, spread as thinly as possible. The less you use, the less there is to smudge, slide, or melt off. If you need to hide offensive spots like blemishes, go directly onto the spot conceal using a stick concealer. If you need complexion brightening, try applying an illuminating makeup base first, which is less pigmented but with light reflecting particles that just might do the trick to lend your skin a radiance boost.

#2. Avoid dark, intense colours

Especially so with eyeshadows, pigmented lippies, mascaras and eyeliners. The darker and more intense the colour pigments, the more likely smudges are to be super obvious. Go for the lighter colour alternatives, which will also give your makeup look a breezier, more summery feel. Think a light wash of pink or cool neutral eyeshadow on your lids and a slick of tinted lip balm. Skip the black eyeliner and mascara, why don’t you?

#3. Waterproof, sweat- and sebum-resistant formulas are your friends

If you must use thicker foundation, or eyeliner and mascara, pick formulas that are waterproof, sweat- and sebum-resistant. These were literally made for hot, humid climates with smart science and carefully chosen ingredients to counter the effects of moisture and heat. Just remember to remove them thoroughly at the end of the day with an oil based makeup remover followed by a double cleanser facial wash, this is because these formulas were made to adhere better to the skin and require more effort to get off.

Try: (top row) Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation, $62; Lancome Grandiôse Waterproof Mascara, $50; Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen, $27 (bottom row): Shu Uemura Blanc:Chroma Brightening & Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil, $55; M.A.C Cleanse Off Oil, $51

#4. Cool down

Help your skin to cool down even before you apply makeup. Check out smart summer skincare formulas that have been touted to cool down skin temperatures so that makeup goes on better. On the go and need a little refreshment for your skin? Try spritz of cooling face mist. An always-welcome skin treat on a hot day.

Try: (top row) Clarins Hydra-Essentiel Cooling Gel, $58; La Mer The Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream, from $290; Dior Cooling Hydration Sorbet Eye Gel, $88 (bottom row) Herbivore Botanicals Rose Hibiscus - Hydrating Face Mist, $25; Saturday Skin Daily Dew Hydrating Essence Mist, $48

#5. Subtract before adding

When skin gets super sweaty and greasy and your makeup just disappears off your face, you might instinctively want to reach for your foundation and makeup colours to touch up. But before you do that, remember that there’s a layer of oil and grime on your skin’s surface, all mixed with traces of the makeup you have put on previously, and putting on more makeup on top of this will look cakey. Use a baby wipe or makeup removal wipe to take off the grime before you touch up with a hydrating, refreshing face mist and then put on more makeup.

Try: First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Caffeine Matcha Wake Up Wipes, $25; Sephora Exfoliating Wipes, $10; RMS The Ultimate Makeup Remover Wipe, $26
