“Whoo-hoo, I feel like Lara Croft in Tomb Raider!” Yours truly is sun-kissed and sweaty from clambering over the craters and crevices of Ta Prohm in Angkor. Yup, that’s the very same temple that served as the climactic set piece in the Angelina Jolie-helmed blockbuster from the noughties.
The purpose of my exotic expedition? To find out more about Clarins’ new trio of Anti-Ageing Treatment Essences – and yes, I know what you’re thinking: Why Siem Reap? As it turns out, the majestic monuments of the Khmer Empire were sustained by a system of intricate irrigation canals – and this ancient mastery of water distribution is perfectly aligned with the essences’ goal of delivering anti-ageing ingredients into the skin of different age groups.
Felicitous setting aside, the Clarins experts I speak to at the launch stress the importance of selecting skincare that cater to the needs of your age bracket. “These new essences have been created to optimise your skin’s permeability, which becomes thicker and less receptive to topical skincare as you grow older,” says Dr Olivier Courtin-Clarins, managing director of the Clarins Group.
Here’s a neat analogy. Think of how much more difficult it is for a liquid to soak through a slab of concrete as opposed to a sheet of two-ply tissue paper – and then think of how much less efficient your serums and salves would be if they were to merely sit on the surface of your skin. In other words, like entrusting your parcel to a postman, the quality of delivery – does he ring the bell or does he simply dump your stuff on the doorstep? – is every bit as important as the contents within.
