SK-II SPECIAL

Choosing to leave the corporate world to venture out on your own is no small feat. It’s a high risk high reward situation, but great ideas, enough capital, and emotional support aside, you’ve got to have enough passion to persevere through the tough times. For Jeneen Goh, that leap of faith came about when she left her job to start up her own social media marketing agency, Social Generator Co. As the cliché goes, she doesn’t feel like she’s working a single day because she loves her work.

Do you think destiny is something that’s set in stone?

I think that destiny is something that we can take control of. I believe in willpower and taking responsibility for your life. If you set your mind on something, you can overcome the odds and accomplish it.

What does success mean to you?

Success to me means waking up everyday with a drive and passion for life, having a sense of fulfillment and happiness in my heart.

What were some of the obstacles you had to overcome?

I spent quite a while searching for who I really was and want I wanted. I wanted to do and achieve a lot of things, so I spent a lot of time trying different things, being in different industries, and struggling to find a sense of fulfillment and achievement in what I was doing. I’m now in a happy place, finally! Looking back, all the time spent searching was worth it…although I wouldn’t mind if I could do it all in a shorter time. Haha!

How did you get your big break?

I’ve always prided myself on having a strong work ethic; being responsible, reliable and producing high-quality work. When I decided to leave my job and start a social media marketing agency, the company I had been working for hired me and became my first client, even before I formed my agency.

How do you balance work and your personal life?

When I first started working on my own, I was keeping really long hours and the lines between work and personal life were completely blurred. These days, I try and set myself work hours and I take weekends off as much as possible.

If you could sum up your journey that got you to this point in three words, what would they be?

Never give up!

Do you have any regrets or things you wish you’d done differently?

I always try (as much as possible) to take whatever happens in my stride and to look forward, not backwards.

What inspirational piece of advice would you give other girls or women who want to succeed and change their own destiny in life?

You can be whoever and whatever you want to be. Keep dreaming, keep doing, and one day, you’ll wake up and find that you’ve arrived – that joy and sense of accomplishment makes it all worth it.
