Former radio DJ Rosalyn Lee, 39, is a muse for Lancôme’s Génifique range. She now spends her time travelling the globe for both work and leisure.
Do you enjoy life now more that you did 10 years ago?
Hell yeah. Ten years ago I was 29 and I think my life started to turn for the better when I hit 30. In my twenties I was slightly more insecure. I was financially unstable and I pretty much had to do the bidding of whoever hired me or engaged me as talent. But these days I get to dictate who I want to work with, how I like to present myself and be able to be truly me. Something that I didn't have the freedom to do before. These days, I'm ok saying “no” and I realised it doesn't mean you're being rude. And I also know who my friends are.
What's the bravest decision you've ever made?
Quitting my job as a radio DJ. It was a cushy job and I still can't believe I did it for 14 years, and that people paid me to play music and to talk. It was very privileged position to be in and I really enjoyed it, but I also felt enslaved to it because I had a job, I had CPF to contribute to and a monthly mortgage, and if I don't have a job I lose my house. All in all, I felt that I'll be irrelevant if I leave the job, that no one's going to hire me, you know, things like that. So it took me a long time to realise that it's more important to live a life. Basically I’m working to a point where I don't need to define myself by what I do.
What are the beliefs that you stand by no matter what?
I do have just one word and that is ‘self-awareness’. I feel that when you have it, it really solves a lot of problems for yourself and the people around you. It’s something that people don't often invest time and energy to attain. And to be self-aware is to realise the mistakes you've done in the past and why you did them, and the consequences. I feel is important and I got my self-awareness through multiple therapy sessions with my psychologist to discover more about myself. So I say self-awareness is key to everything.
If age is an attitude, how do you stay young?
By always being curious and open. When you stop learning, and when you stop being curious and being open, that's when you start to age.
How do you keep your skin looking great while travelling around to remote destinations?
Moisturise! It's so important to use the right skincare. I use an oil cleanser and especially if I go somewhere with a cold climate, a very rich moisturiser and face mask as well. Also, to drink a lot of water and hydrate internally. Lancôme’s Génifique is a serum that I always use after I wash my face, before I apply moisturiser. When it comes to my skin, I think I've just got really got good genes from my mum, she has excellent skin but honestly, I'm not sure if it's Lancôme’s Génifique or genetics. Should be a combination of both.
Another personality for Lancôme’s Génifique line, TV show host, writer and speaker, Anita Kapoor, 47, one strong positive force.
Are you more comfortable in your skin than you were 10 years ago?
I feel time and age can be empty ideas because 10 years ago, something that I thought that I was really confident about, I might have been falsely confident about and 10 years forward when I look at that same thing now, I'm not that confident about it, but I'm comfortable with it. In life, there are psychological, physical, emotional things that do happen with the passage of time, but so long as you are exposed to enough stimuli to encourage, let's say, your emotional growth. You can actually hack your life a little earlier. Life is not linear. It's kind of all over the place, you know, and you just try to make sense of it and connect your dots in your world.
Why is being true to yourself important?
Well, I mean, who else am I going to be true to if not myself, right? I can try to be like somebody else, but that probably won't last very long. I could try to be what my parents wanted for me, but that's not going to fulfil me because I have my own dreams and wishes. So the idea of being true to myself is to first know myself and see if who I am is something I enjoy and love and embrace. And if there's some kinks that need to sort out, I'll sort those things out. But I still love myself. So long story short, being true to myself is loving myself through thick and thin because I am all I’ve got.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
To be less afraid of people not loving me. Because when you're young and you feel the pull of pleasing people, it becomes that thing where they say to you, if you do this, you'll get this… It’s all silent communication usually. And then you grow up understanding that that's the way to gain in the world. So to my younger self, I would say you do not need to please everyone.
What skincare advice would you give to your younger self?
Wash your face well, but also, soap is not skincare. I really love Lancôme’s Advanced Génifique. I use it as a booster. So what I do is mix it with my skincare cream in my hand and I find that it just boosts the cream and it's no fuss. When it comes to skincare, I don't want more than two or three steps to my skincare routine. So when I mix these things together, it all feels real good on my skin and I'm happy and done quickly and I'm out the door after adding just a little bit of makeup.
What do you love about your skin?
That no matter how badly I treat it, it always bounces back. Thanks nan, thanks mama. Because these genes come from my mother's side of the family. For sure.
