When Genevieve Tan had her daughter Lara in 2014, she began to read product labels thoroughly, and was alarmed by what she learnt about the health effects of common skincare ingredients like parabens and sulphates.

“Most of us are mindful of what we feed our children, but what about what we put on their skin?” Tan asks. Determined to start her daughter on a safe-ingredient route, the then art director left the advertising world and spent two years working with a British chemist to develop products free of synthetic colours and fragrances, genetically modified organisms, petrochemicals, sulphates, parabens, phthalates, triclosan and nanoparticles.

Tan, 36, launched The Gentle Label in early 2017. The brand certifies its products with the Soil Association, a recognized external body in the UK, to guarantee authenticity, transparency, purity and quality. All its ingredients are natural, and at least 70 per cent are certified organic.

Tan believes in a simplified routine as well. Her multi-purpose Organic Healing Balm ($22), infused with papaya and calendula, is a fix-all balm for chapped lips, dry hands, the itch of eczema, cracked cuticles, and minor burns, cuts, and insect bites. And she personally tests her products on her delicate three-year-old’s skin – a testament to their gentleness.
