Bskin was born out of Chia Su-Mae’s personal struggle with acne. Having suffered from acne since her teens and feeling that she had exhausted all her options with dermatologists and medication, Chia – who was then a lawyer – decided to take control of her skin condition in 2013.
“My 70-year-old mother, who has been consuming royal jelly for 30 years, looks no more than 60.That’s why I started trying basic skincare with bee-derived ingredients and noticed that my skin became less oily.” Finally, after experimenting and getting positive results with honey masks and propolisbased skincare, she decided to explore a skincare line with a high concentration of ingredients derived from bee products. The result: Bskin.
Pronounced “beeskin” and launched in October 2015, most of the brand’s items have ingredients such as honey and royal jelly. To create this skincare line, Chia tapped into the expertise of her family’s wellness business, the HDI Family of Companies, known for its food products like honey (why this is a great skincare ingredient?), royal jelly and other bee products.
The Bskin W Line of skincare ($66-$113) brightens the complexion. The item at top right is Elvi ($464), a skin-firming device.
Chia also worked with a team of South Korean scientists to develop 14 gentle products that could be used on hypersensitive, acne-prone skin. Aside from adding powerful antioxidants, Chia removed common irritants such as sulphates, mineral oil, parabens, and petrolatum.
And instead of artificial fragrances, she scented the skincare with essential oils like orange. The products were then sent for independent clinical trials in South Korea,where they were tested by women between the ages of 25 and 50 for efficacy. All the products were also dermatologically tested and certified allergy-free.
“With Bskin, customers know what they are paying for – premium, scientifically proven, natural ingredients,” Chia adds.
