Talking to Oon Shu An feels like a catch-up session with an old friend. Her megawatt smile is genuine as she passes along bags of snacks to fuel the Simply Her crew at the photo shoot.

The bubbly persona you see on the 29-year-old’s web show, ClickNetwork TV’s beauty infotainment series Tried And Tested, is exactly what you get in real life – immensely likeable.

What was your first skincare regime like?
Shu An: I was a teenager when I first started on one. I would cleanse, tone and moisturise. I remember using Johnson and Johnson’s Clean and Clear cleanser.

I started with Garnier. What did you use after that?
Shu An: I didn’t know Garnier has been around for so many years! I think your body changes as you get older. I never used to get pimples, but in the past few years, I was getting cystic pimples. I think it’s due to age and hormones, so I started being more disciplined about what I put on my skin.

Your current skincare regimen?
Shu An: I cleanse, tone, use a comedone product to clear my pores, and then hydrate, apply eye cream and use a mask.

No sunscreen?
Shu An: I’m still iffy about it. On days where I think I can cheat, I’ll skip sunscreen. But you should use it every day (laughs).

Some days I feel the same way – and I’m a beauty editor.
Shu An: (Laughs) You’re supposed to put it all over your face and body!

What are you trying right now?
Shu An: I just started to use a sleeping mask on my lips. They are very dry and I don’t have time to keep re-applying lip balm. It’s been a week and my lips do feel more hydrated.

What’s one skincare product you can’t get enough of?
Shu An: Acne Clear Pimple Treatment Cream – you can find this at most pharmacies. It’s a no-frills pimple cream I have been using for six, seven years ever since a doctor recommended it to me. You can even use it to help clear out blackheads!

Any treatments?
Shu An: I just started going for laser treatments for my face. I usually opt for those that don’t require a lot of downtime.

I can see that my skin is brighter. For now, I try to go every two weeks. It’s quite often but when you stop taking care of your skin for a while, you need to do something more intense to reboot it.

Who was the first person that taught you about beauty?
Shu An: My mum. She always says that if your face is fine, you don’t need to put many things on it.

She always tells me about this aunt who has amazing skin and all she ever used was Hazeline Snow Moisturising Cream.

When you work late, what do you do to get your skin looking great the next day?
Shu An: I use face masks. I love the Derma-rx Bio-cellulose Facial Mask (from the DRx Clinic) and how it makes my skin feel hydrated and look radiant.

I also use Kao’s Megrhythm Steam Eye Mask, Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque, and Skin Inc’s Get Glowin’ Brightening Mask and Pure Deepsea Hydrating Mask.

Worst beauty mistake?
Shu An: When I was having regular breakouts about three years ago, I panicked and started putting a lot of stuff on my face, which made my skin even worse.

I was so desperate that I even put Tiger Balm on my pimples – a piece of advice I took from a taxi uncle! Thankfully, nothing happened. Now I’ve learnt that I should leave it alone.

What do you do to de-stress?
Shu An: I light scented candles – I love scents. I use the ones from Diptyque and Penhaligon’s.

Shu An: One thing most people do not know when it comes to having great skin is to wash your pillows and bedsheets regularly. For bath towels, you need to wash them after three uses.

That’s a lot of washing for a busy woman.
Shu An: So what I do is, instead of using big towels, I get hand towels. You use one for your hair and one for your body. They’re more manageable as they are easier to wash and dry faster than bigger towels.

Do you have a favourite makeup look?
Shu An: I like to try different looks but I do have a favourite one.

For my eyes, I draw eyeliner from the middle to the outer eye corners, and then extend it with a dark eyeshadow like a reddish-brown from the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette.

I also extend my brows to make my features look more balanced. I like dark lips. Not a reddish shade, more burgundy, wine-toned ones.

I believe makeup is linked to emotions. How do dark lips make you feel?
Shu An: It makes me feel very confident, powerful and yet, strangely understated. I like Burberry Lip Velvet Lipstick in Oxblood, Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Rouge Pur Couture in #54 and Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Creme in Scandal.

Nice! Okay, if you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Shu An: An eyebrow palette – it can also work as an eyeshadow, eyeliner and contour powder.

I used to hate drawing my brows but now I realise I have to draw them. But I still cannot do it properly.
