Taking an entirely new approach to makeup, Shiseido has launched a new range of 137 products comprising four innovative and sensorial textures: Inks, Powders, Gels, and Dews. They feature breakthrough technology from Japan that combines buildable colour payoff (from very sheer to very pigmented) with a weightless feel on skin.

It doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a ton of makeup, yet the colours make their presence known. Plus all the products are cleverly designed to be extremely easy to use  (idiot-proof really), no special technique or tools needed. Plus they are all designed for long-lasting, comfortable wearability so you won’t have to fuss or touch-up during the work day.

Inspired by Sonoya Mizuno’s polished look on the red carpet of Crazy Rich Asians, here’s my take on the look using just five products.

1. Shiseido Essentialist Eye Palette in 06 Hanatsubaki Street Nightlife (matte mauve, shimmer taupe, matte plum, chocolate brown with red pearl), $60

Made using a breakthrough Cream Powder Matrix Technology comprised of an emollient blend of oils and esters, the eyeshadows have a transparent base to eliminate chalkiness. The pure colour pigment lasts 12 hours without creasing, while spherical-shaped powders ensure a smooth application with zero drag.

Using the shimmer taupe as a base, mix in a little of the matte plum on eyes to darken. To add definition, I blended the darkest chocolate brown with red pearl on the outer corners of eyes, plus used it on my brows.

2. Shiseido Minimalist WhippedPowder Blush in 01 Sonoya, $48

This fluffy meringue-textured blush has an AirFusion Technology so it blends effortlessly across skin like an airy, whipped mousse. This dries into a featherweight powder with a soft matte finish that lasts eight hours. Surprisingly easy to get a thin wash on skin for a natural flush or tap on in layers for more vivid intensity.

3. Shiseido Aura Dew Face, Eyes, Lips in 02 Solar, $38

To highlight, gently tap the cushiony-textured Aura Dew on cheekbones, inner corners of eyes, browbone and cupid’s bow with your fourth or little finger. It can even be used to add a shimmery pop in the centre of lips, on collarbones or dusted on lashes for a glittery eye-opening effect.

The multidimensional Japanese gold pearls of various shapes and sizes has an Enhanced Light Refractive Technology to eradicate chalkiness (read: great for selfies!). The absence of pigment means this adds radiance without compromising the colour makeup that it is layered on top of. Shimmer does not migrate or fall out easily thanks to the latest generation of silicone polymers, film formers, and volatiles, which translates into 12 hours of staying power.

4. Shiseido ArchLiner Ink in 01 Shibui Black, $45

To line eyes, the new ArchLiner has a specially designed angled micro tip – its unique shape and ergonomic design gives maximum precision and control for defining eyes. The angled tip means you won’t experience the usual blind spot that is often created by your own hand or the pen while lining eyes. Highly saturated with ultra-black pigment, one stroke is all you need. The quick-dry formula promises up to 24 hours of waterproof colour to prevent smudging.

5. Shiseido VisionAiry Gel Lipstick in 222 Ginza Red, $36

Weightless Triple Gel Technology in this lipstick features a revolutionary combination of agar, clay, and copolymer gels that allow a greater amount of pigment to unite with water for a vivid, high-coverage lipstick that stays put for hours. The lipstick’s formula is made of 15% water to provide lasting hydration as well.

The ultra-wearable shade is inspired by the fashionable Ginza neighborhood in Tokyo, where Shiseido opened its first cosmetics shop in 1916. “It’s a timeless, universal color that flatters every skin tone,” says James Boehmer, Global Director of Artistry for Shiseido Makeup.

The result?

And yes, this took me just under 10 minutes in the car on the way to work. Tip: I’d limit the eyeliner to red lights or when the car is completely stationary.
