Cryotherapy rapidly reduces the skin’s temperature to freeze and break down fat. It has also been used for more than 30 years to aid in muscle recovery. For the past couple of years, however, it has been applied more frequently to the face and neck by beauty salons to increase the absorption of serums and give skin an overall boost.

Because I have dry skin that gets oily when I lose moisture through the day, I chose the Cryolift Correct Hydra Therapy that’s designed to intensely hydrate skin.

WHAT: My skin was cleansed, toned and exfoliated (either through microdermabrasion or a peel – microdermabrasion for me). A hydrating serum was applied onto my face, then my skin was massaged using a circular metal rod applicator with a flat tip. This applicator cools down the skin rapidly to about minus 10 deg C, and stays on each area of the skin for only a few seconds. This went on for about 20 minutes. Then, a facial massage was given and a hydrating mask applied.

WHY: The change of temperature boosts blood circulation, collagen production, skin repair and renewal. The treatment is also said to help ingredients from the serum used be absorbed by your skin about three times faster than normal. You can even use it to help skin heal after a laser treatment or similar in which skin has gone through trauma. Suitable for all skin types.

VERDICT: There was no pain or discomfort whatsoever. The cryotherapy portion was so comfortable, I almost fell asleep a few times (I only tried to keep awake because I wanted to know what was going on!). The only thing you might want to take note of is how cold the treatment can make you feel – let your therapist know if it gets too much. My skin looked radiant and much less tired afterwards.
