Most of us aren’t completely clueless when it comes to our skin needs. We’ve probably got our skincare routine down pat, especially when it comes to anti-ageing skincare to look and feel younger. But just because our anti-ageing skincare routine is working all right, doesn’t mean it can’t be boosted further to deliver better results.
And it would be even better if that can be done using an easy, fuss-free home skincare device to give our anti-ageing routine a lift.
That’s the reason why Nu Skin, which was ranked by market research company Euromonitor as the world’s number one at-home beauty device systems brand in 2017 and 2018*, developed its newest gadget – the Nu Skin ageLOC Boost.
Powering up the skin with Nu Skin ageLOC Boost
The ageLOC Boost is a system consisting of a compact home skincare device paired with a treatment serum, which work together to deliver its promise of more youthful-looking skin that’s bouncy, radiant and even-toned.
The skincare device uses exclusive technology developed by Nu Skin scientists that sends random intermittent microcurrent pulses into the skin. These microcurrents switch between positive and negative charges every 2.4 seconds to wake up and energise skin, powering it up so it has the energy to function more efficiently.
The ageLOC Boost Activating Treatment is a nutrient-packed serum specifically made for the ageLOC Boost skincare device. The microcurrents optimise and activate the formula, so it can deliver maximum benefits to the skin. It’s packed with brightening and hydrating ingredients like vitamins C and B3, four types of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, sea daffodil and other fruit extracts. The Activating Treatment helps plump and soften skin, while tackling dark spots and the early signs of ageing.
Using the ageLOC Boost adds just two extra minutes to your skincare routine. It can be used at any time, but the brand recommends that you do so in the morning to enjoy the benefits of a beauty boost throughout the day.
What happened when I tried Nu Skin ageLOC Boost for 7 days
My skin condition: Confession: I have awful sleeping habits, often staying up until the wee hours of the morning – way past the ideal period for catching beauty (and reparative) sleep. So it’s no surprise that my skin tends to look dull and dry.
On top of that, my skin is slightly sensitive, and I have uneven skin tone. In short: There are quite a few issues for the ageLOC Boost to address.
Day 1: A total breeze for newbies
The ageLOC Boost skincare device is really straightforward to use. There are no lengthy user manuals to pore over or parts to assemble. I simply charged up the device before my shower and it was ready to go after 15 minutes.
The skincare device is sleek and handy, having been designed by an award-winning design firm to ensure that it is ergonomic and effortless to use. I love how intuitive it is too – switching on, starting a treatment cycle and pausing are all controlled by swiping a finger up or down the handle. And it turns off automatically when done.
After cleansing and toning, I switch on the device, then dispense three pumps of the ageLOC Boost Activating Treatment onto the head, and glide the device over one-half of my face to spread the product over my skin. Then, an upward swipe on the handle to start the one-minute programme.
I’m usually a little skittish at the mention of “microcurrent”, but with the ageLOC Boost, there’s no zappy sensation, no stinging, nothing. I barely feel a tingle, not even when I move the skincare device over the thin, sensitive skin of the undereye area.
The Activating Treatment has a soft, cream-gel texture that helps the skincare device glide over the face smoothly. After its first cycle, I dispense another three pumps onto the head and run it over the other half of my face. Another one minute, and it’s done.
There was a little bit of product left on my face at the end and I simply massaged it into my skin, where it was easily absorbed. If you enjoy using multiple serums in your anti-ageing skincare routine, you can continue with those and your usual moisturiser after. The brand recommends that you use the ageLOC Boost first, to stimulate and recharge skin – when I used my usual serum and moisturiser after, my skin didn’t feel oily or “overloaded” with products.
Day 4: Plumper, smoother, softer skin
After using the ageLOC Boost for three days, I’m beginning to see small but visible improvements to some of my skin woes.
For starters, I’ve noticed a definite change in my skin’s texture and suppleness. Not only does it feel softer and smoother, it also seems to have filled out, becoming plumper and bouncier.
The difference is apparent when I apply makeup or any sort of tinted product – it goes on better, spreads more easily, and I don’t see little bumps or dry patches showing up like before.
Day 7: More even-looking, brighter skin
Although my complexion isn’t dark spot-free, after a week of using the AgeLOC Boost system, I can see that its overall tone has become more even and less patchy looking.
Just one week on and the ageLOC Boost has very much become part of my daily routine. In fact, it slots in so seamlessly into my skincare routine that every morning after cleansing and toning, I automatically reach for it without a second thought – that’s how easy it is.
The device and treatment has also proven to be amazingly gentle on my sensitive skin. It was highly comfortable to use, and left no irritation or tingly sensation when I used it, and the treatment didn’t cause any clogs or oiliness, even though it felt highly moisturising.
To identify the visible skin benefits of using the ageLOC Boost system, Nu Skin’s R&D department commissioned a third-party clinical research lab to carry out a 12-week study. Testers were Asian females aged between 25 and 40, who used it once a day.
Among the results recorded in the clinical evaluation:
85% improvement in radiance
85% improvement in skin tone evenness
78% improvement in firmness
77% improvement in bounce
According to the testers’ self-evaluation, they saw:
108% reduction of dark spots
106% improvement in hydration
103% reduction in pore visibility
97% improvement in smoothness
95% improvement in radiance
93% improvement in bounce and plumpness
