I love working from home. I’ve been doing it for a number of years now, so staying in and pounding away at my laptop is not new. What is new, however, is that with the restricted movement measures and increased time spent at home, I find myself staring at my laptop for longer hours every day. From doing work to watching Youtube videos or just surfing the Net to shop online, I’m never far from my laptop. And don’t even get me started on my growing Netflix, Viu and Disney+ bingeing on the phone.

A year of this has resulted in my eyes looking less than youthful. I not only feel tired, I look tired. And my eyes are the first signs to give it away.

When I look in the mirror, I see puffiness, fine lines and dark circles that seem to be growing with each passing day – I’m looking at you Netflix and all the new K-dramas you’ve been bringing in (I’m kidding, please don’t be mad and do continue to bring in more K-content).

Then, I found out that Lancome had launched their Advanced Genifique Yeux version 2.0. The upgraded formula is said to not only focus on restoring balance to the microbiome of the eye area – yes, it’s different from the microbiome on the rest of your face – it also comes with improved instant efficacy.

That means better hydration after one application, as well as an increase in radiance and smoothness, and a reduction in fine lines, under-eye wrinkles and dark circle intensity – all within four weeks, which is pretty fast for an eye cream.

So of course, I didn’t hesitate to get my hands on it to try its prowess for myself. Here’s how it went:

Lancome Advanced Genifique Yeux, $110

Lancome Advanced Genifique Yeux

What it is

A new and improved version of Genifique Yeux. It not only keeps the skin microbiome of the eye area balanced, but also helps address the signs of ageing, especially unsightly dark circles.

Key ingredients

The updated formula boasts a patented complex of seven pre- and probiotic fractions, which consists of three prebiotics to help create an ideal environment for the eye-area microbiome, and four probiotics that include three bacteria strains, and one type of yeast, to build a strong barrier function and ensure a good balance of antimicrobial peptides on the skin.

Buckwheat seed extract, hyaluronic acid, chlorella vulgaris and a plant-based vitamin C derivative have also been added to reduce puffiness and fine lines, tackle hyperpigmentation and enhance the luminosity of the delicate eye area.

The texture

First thing that strikes me: the cream is thicker than it looks. In the jar, I had the impression that Advanced Genifique Yeux would be light and gel-like. On my skin however, it feels more like a soft velvety cream, rich and nourishing.

There is a slight slip that makes gliding the cream across the delicate eye area easy, reducing drag – I don’t want to add more lines to what I currently have. More importantly, the cream sinks into the skin easily, with no tacky finish.

The results

I tend to try all my new skincare products at night, and this time, it’s no different. Right after application, my eye area looks smoother – the fine lines under my eyes are less obvious, and, while it could be my imagination, my lower lid also feels slightly tighter and firmer.

There is a slight scent, which I’m surprised by as most eye products are usually fragrance-free. But this one is pleasant and subtle, so it doesn’t annoy my senses.

When I wake up in the morning, my eye area looks less tired and I’m impressed because this was just after one application.

Over the next few days, I apply Advanced Genifique Yeux every morning and night. A week later, my eyes are looking more awake – some puffiness is still present, though not as obvious, and the delicate skin around the eye area seems more supple as well.

I’m also noticing that my dark circles don’t look as prominent – they’re still there, but at least they don’t make me look like I could be the third panda at the Singapore River Safari.

The verdict

It’s been two weeks since I started using Advanced Genifique Yeux and I’m pretty pleased with the results so far. My eye area looks less dull and tired – and that’s even though I’m clocking less than six hours of sleep on some nights.

The fine lines from dryness under the inner corners of my eyes are also not as obvious, and the entire eye contour looks plumped. My dark circles are still a work-in-progress and Lancome says you should see significant improvements after using one jar – an increase in firmness by 89 per cent, tighter and more lifted by 82 per cent, and re-plumped by 80 per cent.

If anything, my only gripe would be that since the eye cream comes in a jar – and a lovely glass jar it is – I would have preferred an accompanying applicator or eye massage tool to enhance the product’s benefits, and ensure that I don’t have to dip my finger into the cream each time. At a time where many brands are launching applicators that magnetically adhere to the jar or bottle (so you won’t ever misplace them ), I had hopes that the new Genifique Yeux would have done so too.
