Everyone who knows me, knows I adore a crazy hair colour – it’s been various shades of blue for almost a year now – but after years and years of colouring my hair I now suffer from a sensitive scalp. This has meant that I’ve been relying on a very particular brand only available in London and doing my colour myself as, and when, I can.

So, imagine my excitement when I discovered that there is a salon product available in Singapore that can give you the “K-Pop krazy kolour” you want, and reportedly not upset your sensitive scalp at the same time.

According to the brand, Goldwell Elumen colouring system is “free of oxidants, ammonia and peroxides” and also “improves the hair structure”. The brand has something it calls a “Unique Penetration System” which is said to “allow better absorption of colour to provide long lasting and intense colours”.

This “magnetic effect” is what helps Elumen’s strong colour pigments be “locked” into the hair follicle, creating permanent colour for even the most vibrant, unnatural shades; perfect for your K-Pop look.

I was lucky enough to have Goldwell Singapore’s education manager Beng-Lee Kuah do my hair; lucky because since I already had mostly electric blue hair, he really had to use all his skills to ensure that my new colour came out properly.

First of all Beng-Lee attempted to removed my existing colour with a “pigment remover” but unfortunately my distinctive shade just wouldn’t budge; so he had to resort to bleach, which worked a treat and using the Goldwell Silk Lift system, didn’t irritate my scalp (a major plus for me), nor damage my already over-processed hair.

Once he had a clean slate, so to speak, Beng-Lee was able to go to town with the Elumen colours, giving me a super vibrant violet-blue overall colour with lighter sections to “lift the look” for a more modern feel, and navy sections to add depth to my rather fine hair. He even toned my regrowing under-cut with a blue-toned beige brown to go better with the overall new colour.

It looks amazing! Even if I do say so myself. But more importantly for me, it did not irritate my scalp at all; not one little bit. And amazingly, considering the original state of my hair (pretty much like blue straw) and the fact that it was bleached right back to platinum white blonde, the condition of my hair was actually better, much better.

According to Beng-Lee, some Singapore salons actually use the Elumen colouring system as a treatment; and truly, based on my personal experience I can see why, it really does improve the quality of your hair.
An additional plus for me is that the Elumen colouring system results in permanent colour which means you don’t get the rapid fading usually associated with super bright hair colour.

To say I’m impressed is an understatement; I’m a total believer.

The process comes with a “protective” system as well, a shampoo, conditioner and styling / protective spray that when used correctly will ensure that you don’t loose the vibrant colour until you want to.

Of course, if you’re not sure you want electric, violet-blue hair – or leaf green, true orange, lilac or hot pink for that matter – for a long time, then you can mention that to the stylist and they’ll use the system without the “locking” function, allowing the colour to fade more naturally.

But for those of you who, like me, want to stand out from the crowd and go “K-Pop kolour krazy”, plus if you have a sensitive scalp or are concerned about damaging your hair, the Goldwell Elumen colouring system is perfect.
