Ask a makeup artist and chances are they’ll tell you that the secret to having your foundation last the whole day in Singapore’s humid weather is a foundation primer.

Sometimes though, oil controlling and pore perfecting primers prove to be far too effective on my combination-dry skin; I get that uncomfortable, tight sensation on my face at the end of the day.

Naturally, Bobbi Brown’s latest Skin Smoothing Pore Perfector spent a while sitting under my stash of beauty products, for its claims were mainly for oil control and pore size reduction.

That was until I passed the tube to makeup artist Ros Chan for a recent shoot, who told me that it made the model’s skin look “glowy”, instead of the usual matte finish you’d expect from a pore primer.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I then tested the product for two days. One was during a sunny Chinese New Year day – three house visits under the hot sun – and the other was spent in an air-conditioned office. My skin survived both – it did not feel tight or uncomfortable at the end of the day, and my serum foundation held up for 10 hours.

The white lotion-type primer was easy to apply. It feels a lot more like a light-weight emulsion, but dries quickly to a radiant satin finish, and instantly blurred the look of my pores.

Foundation went on easily on top, and true to Ros’ words, my complexion looked like it was lit-from-within and not dull or overly matte. And there was no need to touch up throughout the day, except for maybe a little blotting on my T-zone – which tends to get oily – after eight hours.

At the end of the day, it was easy to remove with my regular oil cleanser. I did not see any immediate reduction to the size of my pores, but the product claims to minimise the size of them with regular use.

Get this if you have normal to combination-oily skin and struggle to get that K-Beauty glow. This primer will help your skin look radiant, and not oily. Those with oily skin will probably have to blot after four hours or so.

Folks with drier skin who are interested in the product, you can do what I did by applying a serum foundation over to keep the moisture intact. I used the brand’s latest Intensive Skin Serum Foundation (out in April).
