The nude lip has been on trend for a long time but doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere, as many designers put it on the Autumn/Winter 11 catwalk.

While the trend looks great it’s hard to master, as picking the right shade to mask your own natural lip colour takes some effort. Matte or semi-matte lipsticks are often the best bet to achieve this look, while skin should also be kept shine free.

To pick a shade that complements your skin, try at least two different nude lipsticks. You will immediately see whether you look better in yellowish or blueish tones. Stay away from anything too orange, peach or pink as the whole purpose of the nude lip is for it to be as flesh coloured as possible. Nars and MAC have great options, and Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in Vanilla Truffle is a classic.

Before applying lipstick, prime your lips with a base, such as Guerlain Kiss Kiss Liplift Smoothing Lipstick Primer (pictured left), a concealer or your foundation. It takes the redness out of your lips and also ensures colour stays on longer. When applying lipstick you can mix in a bit of concealer to make sure the shade is as skin-like as possible. A dry concealer pencil can help with the contours, thus blending the lips into face.

The nude lip looks best with bronzed cheeks or a smoky eye. If the matte lip looks too extreme use a cream or beige lip gloss.

Done right, the nude lip can make as strong a statement as its red alternative. © COVER MEDIA, Photos: © Showbit
