Photo: Balenciaga – Theirs are in leather; the new scrunchie comes in many materials.

From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, this wasn’t just something to hold up long hair. Like every practical idea which also beautified, it became a fashion statement. Made of fabric-covered elastic, it came in every material, colour, print and finish. Almost every woman wore one – or two, or three at a time.

Its good-for-hair benefits were sound, too: Unlike elastic bands, the scrunchie didn’t snag or break hair – ever. It didn’t snap apart – ever. And when we finally wanted to let our hair down, it became a wrist accessory.

The reasons for its glory days are the same reasons why it’s hot again.

Here’s who’s wearing it, how they’re wearing it, and where to get you some.
