Tom Ford has done it again. The epitome of luxury meets science, Tom Ford Research is the newest innovation from the visionary fashion designer turned beauty innovator.

Driven by his quest to find skincare that met his strict requirements, Ford decided to create his own. Gathering a team of scientists and working in his own dedicated laboratory, he set up Tom Ford Research, his personal incubator and research facility focused on the latest advances in skin and ingredient science and study.

How exacting is it? It took three years and 74 previous trials (and rejections) to achieve a product that met Ford’s standards.

Tom Ford Research is Ford’s vision “to merge breakthrough skin science with true luxury, to create transformative skincare, regardless of skin type or gender”.

The star ingredients

The biggest star active behind Tom Ford Research is caffeine to stimulate the skin, just as caffeine in your morning java does the same for your body. And Ford would know –  the fashion luminary is known to be work-obsessed and fuelled by caffeine on a daily basis.

Ford’s researchers found that caffeine is able to increase skin’s natural energy, boosting hydration levels and keeping the complexion luminous. This active ingredient also promotes the movement of sodium ions – small, charged molecules found on skin surface – to act as carriers of an electrical energy flow to renew and invigorate skin. These findings have been presented at the 2018 American Academy of Dermatology Conference.

Together with a rare white porcelain cacao to protect against free radical damage and environmental aggressors, and highly-prized gyokuro (a type of green tea) to soothe sensitive skin, the formula is also fortified with hyaluronic acid and peptides to boost skin’s natural energy for a luminous and youthful complexion.

The Tom Ford Research range

The collection comprises just two products currently – the Serum Concentrate, 20ml ($503) and Creme Concentrate, 50ml ($588).

The former is enriched with glycolic and lactic acids, and peptides to banish fatigue, giving the complexion a boost of radiance while refining skin texture. The Creme Concentrate is packed with algae extract, hyaluronic acid and peptides to keep skin smooth and supple, plumping it from within to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

The pair of products delivers results: Clinical trials on over 200 testers, both men and women, found that they brighten the complexion, refine skin texture and increase moisture levels. Bonus: The products are fragrance-free too.
