Still trying to perfect the classic wing-tipped line, wondering how high the flick goes, how thick to draw it, and to use gel, pencil or liquid eyeliner? Stop.
You’re not admitting defeat – there’s just an easier, faster and better alternative: the thumbprint eyeliner look. Any noob can master it. It doesn’t call for precise lining. And it lets you get away with mistakes.
Hollywood darlings like Selena Gomez and Lady Gaga are doing the look as well. And designers Tom Ford and Jason Wu featured it on their models in their Spring/Summer 2018 shows.
How to get the look: Use a pencil or kohl eyeliner. Line the upper eyelid. Colour in a small blob at the outer eye corner. Smudge with finger. Done.

Here are 5 super-smooth pencil ones you need. They all have great colour payoff, won’t drag on eyelids, and are waterproof – all the better to help you get the perfect half-moon shape every time.
1. Kate Tokyo Smooth Eyeliner Pencil, $11.50
Prefer a more natural finish? This retractable pencil is a good option. The black isn’t as deep, so your look won’t be as intense.
2. LB Smudge Gel Eye Liner in Jet Black, $17.90, from Guardian
This goes on like a liquid eyeliner, allowing precise application, and is easy to shade. Once it dries, it’s resistant to sweat, tears and sebum, which makes it great for oily eyelids.
3. Marc Jacobs Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Irony, $38
This takes about 15 seconds to dry. Before it does, you can smudge it a little with your fingers to get smoky eyes. The bonus: a sharpener in the base gives you an on-point tip every time.
4. Mamonde Super Longwear Auto Pencil Slim Liner in #1 Black, $14
A budge-proof eyeliner that is super-resistant to rubbing – it will last the entire day. But you do need a good eye and lip makeup remover to take it off.
5. Sisley Phyto-khol Star Waterproof in Sparkling Black, $63
Sweat- and sebum-resistant, the micro-glitter in the eyeliner adds a pop of shine to your eyes. Plus, it’s ophthalmologically tested: women with sensitive eyes or who wear contact lenses should have no problem using it.
