It’s not an opinion that orange-toned lipsticks don’t suit Asian skintones – there’s science behind it. Orange falls ‘yellower’ on the colour spectrum and because of that – when matched with our warmer, yellower Asian undertones – they make us look a little sickly.
And so we end up shunning away from oranges, which is quite a shame. In the right shades, oranges can help to gently brighten up your complexion, lending an overall radiance to combat dullness. It’s like how using a orange/peach colour-corrector on dark eye circles helps to cancel out darkness. When on the lips though, the trick is to not pick true oranges, or colours that are primarily orange.
Go instead for orange-reds. They have red as their base, but with just a touch of orange for that still-flattering pop of colour. Additional bonus: it’s a notch up the typical blue-based red, so you can be sure to stand out from the crowd with it.

As it names suggests, this lipstick glides on like a plush gel-like formula, and leaves a creamy (almost water-y) feeling on the lips. It’s hydrating, so it’s great to nourish chapped lips.
Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge in Ultra Trouble, $50
image
A creamy and rich formula that glides on easily on the lips. Sets to a soft matte finish, and texture helps to hide fine lines and dry patches too.
Hera Rouge Holic Cream in Flame, $45
image
A good ol’ everyday lipstick with a creamy texture that glides easily on the lips. The finish also has a slight sheen to it for a fuller-looking pout.
YSL Beaute Rouge Pur Couture The Slim Matte Lipstick in Strange Orange, $54

The “leather-matte” texture of this lipstick may just be our new favourite matte formula. It’s in between a soft matte and a full matte finish – that means it’s bold enough to make a statement, but not too adventurous for everyday wear.
Burberry Lip Velvet Crush in Tangerine, $46

The sponge puff applicator helps to evenly distribute the lipstick for a soft, velvety, almost water colour-like effect on the lips.
Giorgio Armani Lip Magnet in Hollywood, $57

Don’t be fooled by how incredibly thin and lightweight the formula of this lipstick is – it actually packs a punch of pigment. Dries down evenly to a soft, velvety finish.
