The minimalist chic look has long been a beauty mainstay. On runways for fashion week, it never fails to be seen across at least two presentations, be it for brands like Givenchy, Altuzarra, or Jason Wu (see above photo from Jason Wu S/S’18). On the streets, you’d see at least one or two gals in the crowd sporting this clean, sophisticated look.

Why? Simply because it is subtly flattering and makes us look flawless, gorgeous and chic, while being absolutely work-appropriate.

The classy, versatile look is also great for when you’re just short of time which let’s be honest, is most of us every morning.

To help you nail the timeless look, we had a chat with Estee Lauder’s Chief Makeup Artist, Jerome Chan. Armed with 12 years of experience in the makeup industry, he has put his expertise to good use for countless events whether on runways or across editorial spreads.

He shows us the three steps to achieve a naturally flawless look in under 15 minutes. Aside from that, Jerome has also given a few tips that’ll help to enhance your final look. Read on for more.

Tip #1: Save time spent for makeup application by prepping your skin the night before, or in the morning.

Do this by wearing a night treatment or morning mask (or both) which keeps your skin looking well rested and fresh for the new day. Jerome always uses his trusty Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II at night, which makes him look like he had a full eight hours of sleep (even if he didn’t).

For early morning prep, he recommends the Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask as it freshens you up in 10 minutes and since it’s a foil-backed mask, it “boosts the delivery of active ingredients (Advanced Night Repair serum and Hyaluronic Acid complex) enabling it to penetrate deeper into the skin”, he says.

Tip #2: Always prime your skin and conceal dark spots.

Jerome says that large pores and dark spots are the most common skin flaws that we should cover up, since it provides for a flawless base. According to him, “primer works wonders to smooth out enlarged pores and it creates a smooth canvas for your foundation”. He recommends his go-to The Smoother Universal Perfecting Primer from Estee Lauder, which diffuses pores and imperfections.

To conceal hard-to-hide dark spots, he recommends the Double Wear Custom Coverage Correcting Duo, which helps to blur imperfections, while correcting uneven skin tone.

Tip #3. Don’t mess up the ‘glowing’ look by forgetting to blend your highlights.

It’s a common mistake that leads to streaky looking highlights, so always remember to blend well with a brush after applying highlighter. You want to look like a glowing goddess, not shimmery sandpaper!

The minimalist chic look in 3 easy steps

Step 1. Glowing skin

Apply two pumps of Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup and blend it well for an airbrushed finish. Give your cheeks a natural flush with Pure Colour Envy Sculpting Blush in Blush Petal (if you have fair skin). Use Jerome’s holy grail product for the most gorgeous and natural highlight, the Double Wear Highlighting Cushion Stick.

Step 2. Defined eyes

Jerome says that “your eyes are the windows to your soul, so never leave the house without a cat eye flick”. He achieves this by using a waterproof eyeliner to withstand Singapore’s humid weather, then adds a layer of Little Black Primer with Sumptuous Knockout Mascara for full and longer lashes to frame and open up your eyes.

Step 3. Floating lips

Dab a little foundation over bare lips to hide your natural lip line. Next, moisturise your lips with Pure Color Envy Blooming Lip Balm, which also sweeps a healthy pink hue across your lips. Apply a layer of lipstick in a rosy hue – Jerome recommends the Pure Colour Envy Oil-Infused Sculpting Lipstick in Lush Blush. Finish off the look with a lip gloss for full and glowing lips.
