Ever fallen in love with the latest hair colour trend, only to be scared off by the thought of frequent trips back to the salon for touch-ups? Unfortunately, not many of us have the luxury of frequent dye jobs. And even if we had the money to do so, we’ve all heard horror stories of how detrimental dyeing is to your hair. Not to fret, there’s a very simple formula when it comes to low-maintenance hair colours to keep your hair (and wallet!) healthy:
Rule 1. Avoid dyeing your roots
Rule 2. Stay close to your natural hair colour
The easiest way to keep your hair colour low-maintenance is to stay au naturel. This doesn’t mean that you have to avoid dyeing your hair altogether, it just means that you should pick a colour as close to your natural shade as possible. Besides, a natural hair colour is probably your most flattering look anyway, because it’s most likely to suit your skin tone and colouring!
Here are five hair colour ideas for some serious #HairSpo:
1. Blonde Ombre
Blonde can be easy to maintain – as long as it remains on your tips. This look has an effortlessly chic beach-girl vibe that countless fashion bloggers love, and is so easy to maintain to boot! Just make sure not to go full blonde, because that just means straw-dry hair and painful bleach jobs every two months or so.
The term “lived-In” basically means a slow fade of colour from dark to light, so subtle that you’ll hardly notice it. The best thing about this look is not only how relaxed it looks; it also gives off a “wealthy heiress” vibe because of the rich colouring. This is a colour you can ease into with time, as it grows out beautifully (goodbye, awkward chunks of hair in different colours).
3. Ash Brown
This sweet hair colour is coveted by Koreans and Japanese alike as it suits our fair Asian skin perfectly. Ash brown is the most high-maintenance colour of our low-maintenance list, because it involves the dyeing of the roots lighter, making touch-ups necessary once every few months.
4. Fall Tones
This is undoubtedly my favourite one from the lot, and what I’ll be presenting to my hairdresser to recreate. Think of this as a beautiful middle ground between Lived-In and Ombre. We love how elegantly the highlights transition from tan brown to white-blonde.
5. Crazy Ombre
Our coal-black Asian hair shouldn’t stop us from having fun experimenting with fun, crazy colours. Kylie Jenner demonstrates this perfectly by keeping her dark roots natural and dyeing her tips a bright turquoise-green, resulting in an fresh, spunky look. We love a good ombre because it allows room for us to go crazy with just about any hair colour imaginable – bubblegum pink, dark blue, lilac purple – you name it.
Bonus tip: If you’re looking for something low-maintenance, stay away from shades of red at all costs. The intense, fiery colour fades off faster than you can book your next salon trip, we kid you not!
