The first time I saw actress Son Ye Jin was on television. Her romance drama — Alone in Love — was airing on one of the cable television stations here back in 2006. All I remember was being mesmerised by both her beauty and her acting.

In that particular series, Son played a retired swimmer who parted ways with her husband after having a stillborn baby. But even after their divorce, the pair met up frequently because they were unable to move forward in their own lives (cue lots of sob-worthy scenes).

Now 35 years old, the Korean celebrity has starred in countless dramas and films including the 2010 romance comedy drama Personal Taste (co-starring the equally pretty Lee Min Ho) and a period drama film titled The Last Princess last year.

Her acting skills have also won her numerous accolades such as the Best Leading Actress at the Baeksang Arts Awards 2017 and the Best Actress award at the Busan Film Critics Awards 2016.

Just last Friday, Son was here in Singapore for a big announcement; Skin Inc has just tapped her as the brand’s first-ever Brand Evangelist. I sat down with her at Skin Inc’s swanky new Scotts Square space to take a peek into her makeup pouch for the lowdown on her travel essentials, as well as to find out more about her skincare regime (because she really has a poreless complexion, even up close!).

How do you take care of your skin?

“Before I start filming, I’ll want to make sure that my skin is at its best condition. So I’ll typically apply masks and have facials.

After work, I’ll head home and apply my usual skincare with Skin Inc’s Optimiser Voyage. I find that it gives me effects that are equivalent of having a two-hour facial but I only need 10 minutes with this device.

It is that fuss-free and effective! After the filming wraps up, I usually have less concerns because it’s less stressful so I’ll just try to relax myself.”

You’ve won many acting awards. Do you still feel nervous with every nomination? What other roles would you like to play?

“Yes, I still do. Even though I try hard to feel at ease, it’s still very difficult to shake off my nervousness. I’m not a singer or dancer so the fact that I’m going on stage is very different from my usual job as an actress.

As for my future roles, I’d really love to play Nicole Kidman’s role in the Moulin Rouge! movie.”

Could you share with us your travel must-haves?

“Some beauty essentials that I’ll always bring include a hydrating face mist as well as my Skin Inc Daily Dose Serum that’s been customised specifically to calm and soothe my dry and sensitive skin.

Besides those, I also carry with me my sunglasses, purse, roller ball perfume and cotton buds in case my mascara smudges.

I’ve also just tried the Facial In A Flash sheet mask this morning and I think it’s very effective if you’re looking for a quick fix before an important event. I’m going to buy more before I go back to Korea!”

What does beauty mean to you on a personal level?

“I’ve long been interested in beauty because as an actress, I’m constantly being filmed for movies and dramas, which in turn means my skin has to be in tip-top condition at all times. That’s why I’m always interested to know the well-being of my complexion.”
