WHAT IS IT?

Two things we’ve learnt about the Kim Kardashian contouring method – it’s time consuming, and it’s too thick for Singapore’s weather, so many of us have turned to the K-Beauty way of lightly “shading” our faces for a subtle V-shaped contour.

Now, a new “strobing” trend is offering a more convenient way to attain the look. That is, skipping the contour cream or powder and only using a highlighter to bring out the high points of the face, therefore adding dimension.

If this sounds vaguely familiar to you, it probably is, and you may already be doing it every day. The method is similar to the standard K-Pop idol dewy foundation routine: Mix a liquid highlighter and your foundation in equal parts, then go in with another round of illuminating powders or creams on the cheeks, nose, cupids bow and forehead. Only now, however, is this natural V-shaped look getting a proper term – strobing.

PRODUCTS TO TRY

Of course, with such a term, the first product that comes to mind for this trend is M.A.C Cosmetics’ Strobe Cream. The brand’s new 2-in-1 Tint and Serum, which comes with added skincare properties to fight pigmentation will work as well.

Then, there is the Nars Illuminator, as well as the Illuminating Multiple. These two can be used over or under foundation, as we saw backstage during at Singapore Fashion Week.

Makeup artists backstage at the Thakoon and Love Bonito shows first swiped on the Copacabana Illuminating Multiple on bare skin, before adding a tinted moisturiser and more layers of highlighter to the high points of the cheek. You can opt for a gold highlighter if you want more of a beachy glow.

Finally, there’s the “wet” K-Beauty look that gives the illusion of hydrated skin, on top of the “contoured” appearance. Laneige’s Cushion Highlighter or Etude House’s Precious Mineral Any Cushion Pearl Aura is perfect for this. Layer the products for the best dewy finish.

SOME FINAL NOTES

If you can’t wait to try the look out for yourself, just a word of caution: Always use a light hand and be patient with adding more layers. You don’t want to end up looking like you dipped your face in a whole box of glitter.

Of course, if you ever need a step-by-step tutorial, beauty blogger Tina Yong has a comprehensive one here. Good luck!
