Not-so-fun fact: Most acne meds tend to dry out your skin. The unenviable result? Painful pimples plus the awful peeling associated with parched skin.

Happily, there are a handful of hacks that can circumvent this dreadful desiccation. Try this two-pronged approach to alleviating acne without drying out your hide:

First, quench flaky skin with a moisturising mask. As a general rule of thumb, try singling out stuff with soothing additives like aloe vera and the hydrating skincare superstar hyaluronic acid.

Let your hydrating mask of choice marinate for a bit, then splash off and follow up with a blemish-busting mud mask. Zero in on concoctions containing calming charcoal and redness-reducing chamomile water. Let sit for the recommended amount of time, then rinse off and finish with your usual skincare regime.

Note: Always apply a moisturising mask before your clay- or mud-type formulas, and here’s why: If you apply a thinner textured emulsion after a mud mask, it’ll never be able to properly penetrate the paste. Easy enough to remember, right?

Another top tip: If you have a particularly bad case of peeling, “spot” treat by layering on the second treatment only on acne-affected areas, like your cheeks and chin. This targeted approach addresses excess sebum and congested pores without aggravating the sensitive skin on other parts of your face.

So, to recap. Layer on a comforting balm specifically designed for boosting hydration, then top up with a detoxifying clay mask to purge your pores of pimple-causing gunk. Wash everything off, then dab on your pimple treatment. Good luck getting out of a tight spot, and cheers to clearer complexion!
