The well-blended eyeshadow look is so last year. The current trend is to have glossy eyelids.

Like glittery eyeshadow, the gloss adds dimension to the eyes, but has a more sophisticated feel to it.

Here are some tips on how to wear glossy eye make-up:

1. Keep the rest of your face shine-free

Tone down the shine on the skin and the rest of your make-up by going for a matte finish, says Mr Julyen Loo, trainer and lead artist at Nars Cosmetics.

Avoid wearing glossy lipstick and go for a mattifying powder foundation if you have oily skin.

2. Avoid using lip gloss on your eyelids

Although make-up artists at fashion runway shows occasionally use clear lip gloss on the models’ eyelids, Mr Loo advises against it as the product is not tested for regular wear on eyelids.

“The texture of the lip gloss will melt away powdered eyeshadows,” he says

3. Apply eye make-up with a light hand

To avoid overdoing the look, Mr Loo says the gloss should be focused on the centre of the eyelid and brow bone.

If your eyelids start to stick together when you blink, that means you have too much glossy eye make-up on, says Ms Lyia Halim, senior event artist at M.A.C.

She adds: “Less is more – a dollop of the product that is half the size of a pearl is generally sufficient.”

4. Go neutral in the day and glam it up at night

To pull off the glossy eye make-up look during the day, Ms Lyia advises using a neutral coral or muted brown colour for the eyelids and lips.

For the night, she suggests adding some shimmer over the glossy eye and pairing it with flaming red lips, like the Feel So Grand colour in M.A.C’s Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour range ($39). The matte texture of the lips will contrast with the shiny texture of the eyes.

5. Layer products for staying power

To help retain the gloss on eyelids and prevent creasing on combination or oily skin, Ms Lyia advises dusting a thin layer of finishing powder or eyeshadow primer before applying glossy products on the eyelids.
