For my money, facial massage rollers have well and truly changed the face of “saving face”, so to speak.

What are they? You can find them in a smorgasbord of shapes and sizes, but by and large, these grooming gizmos function much like the “hands” of an on-demand masseuse to manually massage away facial bulges and bloatedness.

Take the the hugely hyped ReFa Carat Ray roller, a platinum-coated placater of puffiness that promises to smooth away sagging and bagging virtually instantly. Bonus: This new and improved water-resistant wonder is shower-friendly and pretty much pocket-sized, too. Perfect for stashing away in your tote for touch-ups on the go.

Raring to get instant Insta-ready skin, even if you’ve been up all night? Here’s how. (And yes, these steps are suited for use with pretty much any other roller of similar shape, if you happen to have one.)

How to massage your face

1.What you do is to warm up a walnut-sized bit of your go-to moisturiser in your palms, then pat the product into your face.

2. Angling your applicator along the side of your mouth, roll up along your jawline towards your ears for about five reps; switch and roll upwards over the cheeks to lift your laugh lines.

3. Be sure to also focus on the pressure points at the brow bone as well as on the inner and outer eye corners, which are the key points for the drainage of toxins. When practiced properly, the pressing motion of your roller will maximise your moisturiser’s potential, for the biggest bang for your beauty buck.

Top tip: Always knead upwards against the forces of gravity and never, ever drag your device downwards back towards your mouth – this rookie error is the reason behind the common complaint that these contraptions don’t “work”. (They don’t work because you’re yanking your skin in the wrong direction.

Of course, this isn’t going to give you the radical revision afforded by a visit to an aesthetician; from my experience, this temporary tightening effect should last a good six hours, making the gadget a great quick fix before a Very Important Event.

Another beauty benefit: I’ve found that this mini massage also amps up blood circulation for a flirty flush in your cheeks; making blusher entirely optional on #MakeupFree days. Good luck fighting the good fight against gravity!
