Like it or not, grey hair will be inevitable for most of us.

Some women embrace their silver strands while others panic at the first sign of grey peeking out.

Thankfully there are plenty of brilliant grey blitzing dyes on the market. So, whether you’re looking for a quick fix for grey roots or an all-over colour, there are countless options available.

But first things first, why does hair go grey?

“The cells in our hair follicles called ‘melanocytes’ generate pigments, the main one being melanin,” says top hair colourist Jo Abury.

“This gives our hair its colour. In general, the more melanin present, the darker the hair colour, the less melanin, the lighter the hair colour.

“As we get older these cells start producing less melanin until there is no pigment at all in the hair and we end up with the transparent hair.”

Here are the best ways to tackle grey:

Temporary Root Coverage
These products are like make-up for your hair. They come in a variety of forms that range from mascara-type wands to small brushes, and are basically colour pigments blended with either wax or oil to make them easy to apply. These products are temporary and last only until your next shampoo.

Permanent Root Coverage
This is permanent hair colour, but it comes in a clever applicator (similar to a comb) that allows you to apply only where needed. Bear in mind that permanent colour lasts several weeks, so if you are not happy with the results you have to live with them for a while.

Permanent Hair Colour
This works with the same technology as permanent root coverage, but is intended for all-over use. Permanent hair colour uses reactive dyes that penetrate the outer layer of your hair and react with the inner layer to deposit the hair colour. There are almost endless options of hair colours, but some companies have developed products specifically designed for grey hair. These grey-specific products often use more moisturising and conditioning ingredients, since grey hair tends to be drier than “normal” hair.
