• Personalised Service
Bloc+ The Salon, 462 Joo Chiat Road, tel: 6440-0316.
This salon hits the spot with its industrial decor and alternative playlist.
It prides itself on personalised service, which means plenty of consultation time and no rushed hairdos.
If you had to try just one treatment here, make it a colour session (from $200). Its Balayage technique creates colour gradations that are quirky yet wearable.
• Get a Director’s Cut
Chez Vous, #05-05 Ngee Ann City, tel: 6732-9388.
Technical expertise meets sheer indulgence at Chez Vous. Its directors-only policy means every stylist here has at least 12 years of experience.
Besides a sleek coiffure, the multiple award-winning salon also offers creature comforts such as a Hydra Bar stocked with Laduree teas and organic snacks, and posh styling pods with in-seat entertainment.
For a cool K-pop look, we recommend the Amplified Treatment Perm ($425, 120 minutes), which straightens tresses from the crown to mid-length, and curls the hair-ends with a treatment-grade cold perm for volume without the frizz.
• For an Understated Do
Kenaris, #04-03 Wheelock Place, tel: 6333-8206.
This is the place for a smart, sophisticated and understated hairdo.
With a clientele of professionals and executives, don’t expect the salon to recommend anything too fussy or over the top.
It also offers excellent perms, colour treatments, and hair and scalp treatments using Redken products.
If you’re heading for a big event, try its hair makeover for a chic updo.
Bring your bloke along, as its forte is sharp and spiffy men’s haircuts (from $59).
• To Transform Your Look
Hairloom, 100 Beach Road, tel: 6295-2088.
With its team of Vidal Sassoon-trained stylists, Hairloom is the place for sharp, edgy cuts.
In fact, simply tell your stylist how you want to look and feel, and he will recommend a cut and colour.
For creative hair colour, try its Balayage Colouring Technique (from $350), which colours hair in different hues in panels, for a softer, trendier effect.
It also offers an excellent Restructuring Treatment (from $130), to help repair chemically damaged hair.
• Get a Japanese Crop
Covo, 43 Keong Saik Road, tel: 6221-4585.
Covo, which means “hiding place” in Italian, is a minimalist space in a quaint little shophouse in Chinatown.
Since its owner and stylists hail from Japan, it’s an excellent place to give your tresses a Japanese spin or experiment with Tokyo street trends.
Most of its hair chemicals are developed in-house by the owner to minimise damage and ensure optimal results.
For full-bodied locks, try the Volume Rebonding ($360, four hours), to get straight tresses at the roots and curls towards the tips.
