1) Bring a hairstyle scrapbook
This is the golden tip. Bringing a few pictures of hairstyles that relate to the look you want helps communicate your dream look to your hairstylist, especially one who doesn’t know your style that well yet.Tell him what your preferences are in as much detail as possible to avoid any miscommunication.

2) Never say: “I’ll leave it to you.”
It’s always a bad idea to tell your hairstylist that he can create whatever hairstyle he thinks is best for you. Everybody has a different perception of aesthetics. For instance, the bob hairstyle you have in mind may be different from what he’s thinking in terms of length and texture. Always communicate with him about what you like. Let him take over completely only when you’ve known him for a long time, and he’s familiar with your likes and dislikes.

3) Be prepared for a reality check
Your ideal hairstyle may not work for you, depending on your hair texture, so you need to be open to tweaking your hair dreams.

4) Is your hair low- or high-maintenance?
Never assume that your hairstylist knows. If you are a wash-and-go kind of girl, tell him, so he doesn’t give you a look that takes hours to style.

5) Learn about styling products
One of the reasons why your hair looks great when you leave the salon is due to the styling products used. Use your time in the salon wisely and ask your hairstylist about the right products for your hair texture. Be specific. For instance, if you are new to hair mousse, find out if you should use it on slightly wet, towel-dried or air-dried hair.

6) Go to the salon with naked hair
It’s best to shampoo and condition your hair at home, let it air-dry and keep it free of styling products before heading to the salon. This way, your hairstylist can see what your natural hair looks like. Alternatively, you can get your hair shampooed before your haircut. Make sure the hairstylist or the person drying your hair does not straighten it too much after shampooing, as that will alter the natural look of your hair.
