Fancl Skin Renewal Pack

Most evenings, we get home looking forward to the calming choreography of layering and massaging multiple potions and poultices into our weary skin—pre-cleansing milks, cream cleansers, softening mists, intensive ampoules, serums, emulsions, clarifying treatments, eye-rollers…the whole kit and caboodle.

Other nights, we crave the simplicity of a good old three-step routine (remember those days?).

On just such a night, after an entire day traipsing about under the baleful, burning watch of a cloudless sky, we were too tired for our usual multi-step regimen—but knew we had to do something to undo the ravages of the day’s worth of free radicals.

Enter Fancl’s nifty Skin Renewal Pack, a new gel mask that the Japanese brand says will purify, moisturise and “restore the skin’s DNA ability to repair itself”.

Being the beauty brainiacs that we are, our eyes headed straight for the list of ingredients. Fancl says the key active ingredient, malvidin, aids in repairing compromised skin cells and expunges harmful gunk, halting skin damage at its source. PR fluff or rooted in real science?

Our sojourn down the rabbit hole of research suggested that the bioflavonoid malvidin, found in plant pigments in berries and grape skins, may indeed protect against UV-induced photo-aging. The antioxidant is combined with royal jelly extract, which Fancl claims will jumpstart the skin’s assembly of aquaporin, a protein crucial in lubricating cell walls. Finally, sea mineral salts and hyaluronic acid work in tandem to remove rough patches of keratin and draw water into parched skin via osmosis—real-life science in action.

Science aside, Fancl’s Skin Renewal Pack is lovely to use. We stuck it in the fridge to chill before slathering a pea-sized glop of the amber-hued gel onto our damp, freshly cleansed face. The consistency reminded us of thin honey—a little sticky, but nothing we couldn’t bear.

Used as an in-shower mask, the mask washed off easily after 10 minutes, leaving our skin plump and our weary spirits lifted. Fancl says to use this mask two to three times a week, which won’t be a problem—we’ll be whipping this out whenever we need pampering without the hassle.

The Fancl Renewal Pack, $46 for 40g, is available at all Fancl stores. For more information, visit www.fancl.com.sg/products.
