It’s true that concealers can mask late nights and strategic make-up can help eyes look larger, but as is usually the case, prevention is better than cure, which is why eye cream can be hugely beneficial.

It’s worth pointing out that not everyone holds with these products, with some beauty gurus insisting your usual face serum can do the same job. That might be the case for some, but if you want to avoid fine lines, puffy skin and that cakey make-up look which comes from dry under eyes, it’s best to treat the area with care – especially if you have sensitive skin.

They might not be the cheapest products on the market, but we have been thoroughly impressed with Eve Lom’s Eye Cream and Eye Lift. The eye contour dries out easily, which is why make-up often sinks into fine lines and draws attention to them, rather than hiding them. Eve Lom’s Eye Cream is packed with sodium hyaluronate which hydrates, while other ingredients cut down fine lines, even out skin tone and tackle dark circles. The pot looks small but only a small dot is needed, so it lasts a long time. Remember to use the ‘pat and dab’ method when applying, rather than pushing and dragging skin. It takes a little longer, but cuts down wrinkles and fine lines.

The Eye Lift is perfect if you rise early or suffer from puffiness. The main ingredient is retinol, which has a lifting and tightening effect that can be felt as soon as it’s applied. As well as making the eye area look fresher, skin also appears brighter.

Lazy ladies need look no further than Sisley’s At Night The Supreme Anti-Ageing Serum, which is formulated to work while you sleep and skin is regenerating. Caffeine extract helps decrease puffiness by cutting fatty deposits, while acai extract and yeast extract tackle those pesky dark circles. Collagen production is also boosted and skin is given a moisture injection to help it look fresh, with repeated use visibly reducing the look of fine lines and crows’ feet too. Also of note is Sisley’s Eye and Lip Contour Cream which is a fine gel to be used in the morning. It provides a massive hydration hit and is the perfect base for make-up, helping concealer stick all day and not cake.

The above creams are particularly useful for those in their 30s and 40s, who already have slight under eye issues. If you’re younger and want to look after the area before lines appear, check out Benefit’s It’s Potent! It’s a soothing cream which moisturises well and leaves under eyes bright and clear. Loquat extract protects skin from free radical damage, peptide complex improves elasticity and firmness and on a frivolous note, the packaging is young and funky.

At the other end of the scale, Caudalie’s Premier Cru Eye Cream is best for ageing skin. This gives a massive hit of fatty acids to skin, aiding regeneration and nourishment and tackling wrinkles at a deep level. Peptides and caffeine are also included and ten per cent pearlisers and powders to help skin look youthful.
