This DIY gel nail polish comes off with just oil and water!

No need to soak your fingers in acetone. This gel nail polish peels right off in one neat layer just by using oil and water. Find out more

Anyone who has done a gel manicure knows the (literal) pain of soaking their fingertips in 100 per cent acetone, not to mention the scraping and filing of the nail surface leaving you with damaged nails after.

But we can’t seem to pry ourselves away from the long-lasting wear and shine that gel manicures give. Somehow, nail art just looks better with it, right?

Well this new DIY kit from Swedish brand Depend Cosmetic claims to solve all our problems: Do your nails in whatever way you want, enjoy lovely shine for two weeks, then let it all come off in one neat layer with just oil and warm water.

Skeptical? Us too, at first. But watch this video from beauty vlogger Yan Tong Xiao Bai before you call it a gimmick. (She speaks in Cantonese but you’ll be able to tell what’s going on.) It looks like it does work, though you’ll have to nudge it a little with an orange stick.

You’ll be able to get your hands on a starter kit – called the Obligatory Start Kit, naturally – at $99 exclusively at Watsons from April. It comes with a nail cleanser, base coat, top coat, an orange wood cuticle stick and an LED lamp.
