Glee star Lea Michele (pictured left), model Petra Nemcova and actress Natalie Portman are just some of the ultra-glam stars flying the flag for veganism.
And while it’s an animal-free diet that’s most associated with the vegan lifestyle, the market for cruelty-free beauty is growing ever-strong too.
Vegan products restrict their ingredient lists by eliminating things like beeswax, collagen, lanolin and lactic acid – all of which are derived from animals.
And now the demand for such cosmetics, which are free of animal by-products, has created something of a booming market.
Here are some brands to check out if you fancy going vegan.
Barry M Cosmetics
Not only does Barry M refuse to test their products on animals, all of their products are suitable for vegetarians. And to make life easier for strict vegans, the few products that are not suitable are clearly marked on the brand’s website. Try out Barry M’s bold black eyeliner, which applies as smoothly as a liquid with the precision of a pencil. Plus, it’s waterproof and super long lasting too.
Beauty Without Cruelty
All BWC colour cosmetics are suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and are fragrance free. The brand’s Attitude Nail Colour in Candyfloss is a high gloss polish that’ll give your fingertips a lovely Spring makeover.
Ren
The only animal product Ren uses is milk in its Hydra-Calm Youth Defence Serum. Other than that, all their products get the vegan stamp of approval. The brand’s Ultra Moisture Day Cream Perfect is a skin-soothing moisturiser, with extract of cranberry seed oil that will leave skin radiant.
Dr. Hauschka
Nearly all of the products listed on the Dr. Hauschka website are suitable for vegans – and those that aren’t are clearly marked. For a glowing base, try the brand’s Translucent Makeup, which nourishes skin with rich avocado oil.
Aveda
Aveda has won countless awards for their cruelty-free approach to beauty. Infused with plant and fruit waxes, this brand’s hydrating Sheer Mineral Lip Colour smells good enough to eat with its sparkling spearmint and sweet vanilla aroma. © Cover Media
