Cosmetics company CoverGirl is joining the sporty nail art trend after signing a new deal as the NFL’s official beauty partner.

At last summer’s Olympic Games in London both athletes and fans sported some exciting and highly creative nail art, helping to kick off a recent trend for manicures in team and national colors.

Now Covergirl has made history as the NFL’s first official beauty partner, and from September 5 the brand is selling official ‘fanicure’ packs inspired by all 32 NFL team logos and colors. The packs are designed to allow nail art fans to give themselves colorful team-themed manicures on game day.

“If you’ve ever tailgated or been to an NFL game, you understand the passion and emotion that goes into being a fan — it’s not just about the competition on the field on game day, but also the rivalries in the stands, at home, with friends or even around the office water cooler,” said Covergirl’s Esi Eggleston Bracey.

Alongside the DIY color packs, CoverGirl will also be hitting the games with mobile manicure stations and special nail lounges inside select NFL stadiums which will provide fans with themed nail art. The fanicures kick off in Atlanta when the Falcons take on the New England Patriots on September 29, with more appearances at games in Dallas, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago and Denver among other cities, running through to the Tennessee Titans’ home game on December 15.

The brand is promoting the project with a #nailgating hashtag on twitter, while the fanicure packs will be available via a special NFL section on the CoverGirl site – covergirl.com/NFL and at drugstores throughout the US.

While the NFL might be the first US sport with official nail art, it’s in Major League Baseball that the players are experimenting with the trend. Recent reports have seen catchers in the league painting their nails with white and colored varnishes to help communicate complex codes and calls to their teammates.

Athletes are also using nail art as a form of political protest. Competing at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow last month, Swedish high-jumper Emma Green-Tregaro and runner Moa Hjelmer painted their nails in rainbow colors to protest Russia’s recent ban on ‘gay propaganda’.
