Chanel’s Rouge Coco lipstick Rouge Coco Shine, $44

Chanel’s Rouge Coco lipstick was launched in 2010 as part of the brand’s attempt to convince young women to wear lipstick again, rather than lipgloss, and was the brainchild of makeup guru Peter Philips, who was named creative director of Chanel Makeup in 2008.

Now the brand has released a new “shimmer” version – nothing so gauche as a gloss – the Rouge Coco Shine. It’s a semi-sheer lipstick containing Hydratender complex for reportedly up to eight hours of hydration and comes in 25 shades – although only 20 of those will be available in Singapore.

Rating: 5/5

I’ve always been a lipstick rather than a lipgloss girl – I’m convinced that there really are these two types of women in the world – so I was excited last year when Chanel’s Rouge Coco lipstick was released. I’m also a massive fan of Chanel Makeup in general – I swear by the brand’s foundation.

However I was a little disappointed when I realised these new lippies were not a long-lasting formula. As a coffee drinking, talking, always busy type of person, I need long-last lipstick.

Still, the colours were wonderful and the texture divine so I forgave the lack of staying power.

The new version, the Rouge Coco Shine, has the same issue – it’s definitely not long-lasting – but the shades are even more gorgeous than the first lot.

I tried a gentle pink-based nude with touches of copper named after Gabrielle Chanel’s true love, Arthur “Boy” Capel, which is perfect for those days when you want a neutral shade that doesn’t wash you out and Deauville, named after Coco Chanel’s first shop, it’s a stronger neutral, slightly amber brown which is great for evening as it gives greater definition.

I also tried Monte-Carlo, which is described as a “fresh and luminous red”, but which is more a strawberry shade when applied. This is super for anyone looking for a coloured lip that’s not garish.

The trick with these lipsticks is to apply well and apply often – it’s what they’ve been designed for. The iconic case with the double Cs is smaller and neater but still has the same elegant cachet of any Chanel beauty product.

The joy of using this lipstick in public; the slightly sexy overtones even if it’s just staring at yourself in the mirror as you apply it, is why women love wearing lipstick.

All 25 shades of Rouge Coco Shine have lovely, evocative names and all are connected in some way to the allure of Mademoiselle Chanel’s life and although only 20 will be available in Singapore, there’s certain to be a colour for every woman.
