We may be staying home more often, and using less makeup than before due to mask-wearing, but amidst these strange times, foundations still have a place in our heart (and on our faces). Many of us turn to foundations for extra coverage when we head out, and of course, for those all-important Zoom calls.
As we become more in tune with our mental and physical wellbeing, we are paying more attention to skincare than before. When it comes to foundations, it’s important to not only find the perfect formula that helps us achieve flawless and radiant skin, but also one that’s actually beneficial for our skin. Take, for instance, the Clarins Everlasting Foundation.
Boasting an ultra-light texture, the new Clarins Everlasting Foundation feels weightless on the skin and gives a natural full-coverage matte finish. And with all the mask-wearing, this foundation is perfect because it’s transfer-, sweat- and smudge-proof. And that’s not all — the plant-enriched formula protects your skin from pollution and cares for the skin with 24-hour hydration, too.
In fact, makeup artists like Dollei Seah and Clarence Lee can attest to the claims of this new holy grail. In an exclusive shoot with Her World, these two beauty pros worked their magic on #HerWorldTribe members Bella Koh, founder of SLOWHOUSE, and Jaime Lee, founder of The Paper Bunny, to showcase the beauty of Clarins Everlasting Foundation, as well as how to take their makeup from day to night.
Here, we sat down with Dollei and Clarence to get their tips on applying foundation, and find out what they love about the new Clarins Everlasting Foundation.
1. How would you describe your style as a makeup artist? Where or who do you get your inspiration from?
Dollei: “Clean… even with very heavy makeup. I love the look of good skin.”
Clarence: “I get my inspiration from chatting with my clients and getting to know them better while studying their faces at the same time to figure out how to make them look their best. That’s my style — yourself, but much better!”
2. Do you have any tips on applying foundation we should take note of?
Dollei: “Prepping your skin and using the right base is very important. We need to make sure that we have the correct quantity and quality of product before foundation application to avoid it from slipping.”
Clarence: “Always start off light, then add on more where needed. Foundations are not meant to mask your face but to make you look like you have real perfect skin.”
3. What about tips on applying concealer?
Dollei: “First and foremost, I will sanitise or clean my fingertips, or even use the tip of the brush and gently tap it to blend and build coverage.”
Clarence: “Many still think that the concealer should be lighter than the skin or foundation shade. That’s a no-no for me. It should either match the skin tone or sometimes, a slightly darker shade would work even better. You’d be surprised!”
4. What’s an important feature that you look out for in a foundation?
Dollei: “Formula, colour, consistency, long-wear, blend-ability & build-ability.”
Clarence: “Can I have two, please? Haha. Closeness in shade and wearability.”
5. What are your thoughts about makeup with skincare benefits that are powered by plant extracts?
Dollei: “It should address easily irritated skin conditions and most importantly, be cruelty-free!”
Clarence: “Clarins has always been known for their plant-derived skincare and it’s just great that the same goodness is in their makeup now.”
6. What do you like most about the Clarins foundation?
Dollei: “I love the smell! The build-ability is so good that I don’t even need a concealer. The lasting power is also amazing – it doesn’t cake up like some other matte formulas.”
Clarence: “I like that it gives very good coverage immediately upon application and that it looks matte enough even sans powder. Those who don’t like powdering after foundation to avoid the appearance of fine lines will love this!”
7. As a makeup artist, it’s important for the products you use to have lasting power. How has the Everlasting foundation held up when you use it for shoots or your clients?
Dollei: “I personally like the Clarins Everlasting foundation for my combination-oily skin, because it’s matte, oil-controlling and hydrating.
On-screen, with the powdery finish and pore-minimising effect, it doesn’t require any frequent touch-ups. In fact, it’s pretty consistent and can last for up to 12 hours and more.”
Clarence: “I haven’t had any complaints so far. It stayed on well throughout photoshoots even when I had very little powder over it. And none of the clients I’ve used it on has gotten back to me telling me the foundation had worn off.”
8. What’s an advice you would give to someone who’s looking to buy the right foundation?
Dollei: “It’s always good to test the product on your neck. First of all, it helps to ensure that the shade matches your skin tone, and you can also check to see if the foundation has oxidised on your skin upon application. It’s great as you can also see if the colour blends seamlessly with your face and neck, and check if you have any reactions to the product.”
Clarence: “Try the foundation on your makeup-free skin to check for shade, coverage and comfort before buying. It doesn’t have to be on the whole face – the area between the jawline and cheekbone should be good enough.”
9. How do you avoid having your foundation separate or looking cakey when you have it on for the whole day?
Dollei: “Bring along the sponge or brush you apply your foundation with at the beginning of the day. Then, blot the oil off your face and touch it up with the sponge or brush, and it should be able to blend together and smoothen out. If you need extra coverage, you can layer on more products.
Also, an important thing to note, I highly recommend that you wash and use a clean dry sponge or brush every day for hygiene purposes.”
Clarence: “Clarins Fix’ Make-Up to the rescue! I love this makeup prepping and setting spray because the mist is so fine and even, it doesn’t leave your face feeling too wet that you’ll need to blot off.
You can also mist over your makeup when you feel you need a pick-me-up (and enjoy its pleasant but gentle scent), then blend off any foundation smears if there are any.”
